                                             LUX.

My ears are ringing but I can still hear the small gasps of the boys next to me. My mind is clear of all the thoughts I was once thinking in the basement.

I failed her. I failed my sister.
My sister is dead.

The small body that was once sitting next to me—giving Joe a pure smile when he greeted her— is now-

My breathes turn jagged and the sight of my thirteen year old sister being held up by my dad while the metal bar sticks through her middle is blurred.

———————

"So, lux. How do you feel today?"

The sentence snaps me out of my head and I sit up a bit straighter.

"Um, I feel okay."

I state while nodding. I could tell her that I still think about that night everyday since it happened, but that would just make the smothering worse.

My eyes wander to the stack of green pamphlets on her desk in front of her. I fight back a scoff.

She tucks her lips in her mouth and squints her eyes, making her look like a fish. I let a small smile spread across my face.

Her face returns back to normal and mine does too.

"Alright Lux. Get on back to class." She says while shutting her notebook.

The second my brain processes those words I almost leap out of my chair and prance out of the counselors office.

A short session. Thank god.

I don't like it in there, they're always on my back on how I feel when they don't care.

I tell her a quick "bye" over my shoulder.

———————————

"No! I swear she looked like a fish!" I say in between giggles. Mary, Bonnie, Therese, and I are eating lunch in the grass at the side of the school.

Mom made all of us ham sandwiches,(if it can even be called that), an apple each, and one bottle of coke. We've just been passing around the coke since the "Sandwiches" are vile.

I smell his weird cologne before I see his legs in my peripheral.

I take a sip of the lightly watered down coke then pass it to Bonnie. I pick up the sandwich once again, inspecting the wet piece of meat on the stale bread. I choke out a laugh.

"It's just meat on bread!" We all laugh at that. But in between our laughs, he speaks. He says my name in a quiet, hoarse voice.

I used to talk to the boys here before, but that's because I was bored then. And now all I want is to hang out with my sisters.

I look up and see Trip. I gather all my remaining patience and put on my nicest voice. "Hey!" I even added in a small smile.

I look at Therese and she looked at me with a small smile before taking a bite of her apple. I fight back a laugh.

When me and the girls go back to talking for a few minutes he finally leaves. I finally let go of the deep laugh I've been holding and we all fall into a fit of laughter. "He's like a lost puppy!" I giggle.

God, my sister is gone and these boys still can't leave us alone.
