One by one, their jackets fell on the grass as they took to the sky. Only Goku remained. He stood by Mr. Toriyama's grave, his head low, deep in thought.
"Aren't you joining them?" Master Roshi asked him.
"Nah," Goku said. "They got this."
Whis raised his staff above our heads. The gem in the middle began to glow, then a flash of green followed. But there was no barrier whatsoever.
"This is incredible," dad said, feeling the air around him. "Is it safe to touch?"
"Of course," Whis said. "It's divine energy."
"Where is it?" I rubbed my eyes and looked around. "I don't see anything."
"No one can actually see it," Goku said. "We feel. Then we visualize how it looks."
My mind couldn't process what Goku had said. It sounded complicated, like finding the least common denominator of two unlike fractions.
"You two should visit me sometime," Master Roshi said. "At the Kame House. First lesson's free."
Dad considered this for a moment." But I have a job," he said, scratching his head. "And the kid has...homework."
"Nonsense," Master Roshi said. "There is always time for martial arts."
A red light suddenly illuminated our faces. The night was lit up by a gigantic ball of energy that could swallow the entire planet. Jiren held it with one hand high above his head.
"Special Beam Cannon!"
"Buu!"
"Death Cannon!"
"Final Flash!"
One by one they took a shot at it. The sky was filled with energy—streaks of yellow, pink, purple and blue. The gigantic red ball got stained with different colors. But it didn't explode.
"Looks like it's not enough," Master Roshi said.
Goku nodded. "This one's for Akira-san."
