I opened the door to our possibly new home. The second my eyes hit the inside I new it was for us. It was big and the natural sunlight had made it seem like a dream or something. Our relator let me and Brenton go around the house and explore the apartment. She was reading off all the things it had to offer. "A elevator garage.. a skyline view.. finished floors.. 3 bedrooms..."
I had always looked at these apartments thinking that they were for royalty.. and had always wondered what the inside of one of these babies looked like... coming for slummy and small Manhattan.. to up high and mighty Manhattan.. I liked the view.
"I'll leave you to alone to talk.. but this apartment has been a HUGE commodity.. you may want to make an offer today just to be safe.."
"I love it... I can see us having your and my friends over here.. coming here the night of our wedding.. raising our kids here... what'd you think" Brenton asked me.
I felt the same way. "I love it.. I think we should make an offer.."
"Alright so it is listed at 19.9 million.. it has just dropped in price by 10%.. so I would recommend 19 million."
"Woah.. 19 million dollars?!" I asked her.
"Yes.."
"No.. that's just ridiculous. No.. we aren't buying our first apartment for 19 million dollars."
"Fine.. then I am. I will buy it.. my name in the contract she doesn't have a say." he said winking at me.
I felt horrible.. I was an unemployed student I could hardly pay off car insurance let alone a 19 million dollar apartment.
"Brenton no."
"Sam.. I love you but shut up.. I want this apartment.. so we're going to get it!"
"BRENTON NO."
"I'll leave you two alone for another minute.." our realtor said backing away from us.
"Sam... please let's not argue.. I'm not getting this because of the cost.. I don't care about cost. What I care about is you.. and this is the apartment I want for us.. this is what we want. So this is what we are going to get. Okay?"
I loved the fact that he was doing this because it was what I wanted.. but I didn't have any money for us to get it. I couldn't feel comfortable owning a home where I didn't have to pay for anything.
"Brenton I appreciate where you are coming from it's just.. that I.. I don't like feeling like I owe anyone anything."
"Sam.. you don't owe me anything. Not a single thing. I am doing this for us. Not because I want it now and am going to make you pay for it later. No. I'm not that kind of person and you should know that. I am doing this because it's our first step toward our future together.. and I want it to be perfect, starting with this." he leaned over and kissed me.
"Now we are going to get this damn apartment. Like it or not." he said winking at me.
I knew there was no more reason as to auguring with him. We sat down with the relator and put our offer in.
"Can you believe we just put down a payment for a new apartment?!" Brenton asked me smiling as we walked out of our possibly soon to be new apartment complex.
"Noooooooo..." I said smiling.
"Well we still have a good chunk of time to kill before any of our family get here. What do an engaged couple in the greatest city of the world do??"
"Get a hot dog.." I couldn't help but mention it. I was starving... and a central park hot dog would definitely hit the spot.
"Sounds good let's go!"
