"MARCOOOOOOOOO!!"
I grunt in confusion. "What the hell-" before I can even finish my sentence, a heavy weight crashes into my stomach. "WAKE UPPPPPPP!!!"
I pry my eyes open, trying to catch my breath. The ginger haired boy in front of me is familiar. "Ferg?"
"HEYYYYY MANNNNNNN!"
He rolls onto his side.
"So. How's it goin'?" He wriggles his eyebrows at me.
I think about the last year I've spent living with Alfonso. How had it been? It sucked at first. I missed Star, more than I thought I would, and things felt... too normal. Since I was fourteen, I'd been going on magical adventures, fighting off monsters every step of the way. But Star was out of my life now, and all that adventure had gone with her. I was bored, restless. It got better with time, but I was still craving that danger, the excitement of it. Every day was the same. Wake up, go to work, watch some random tv show with Al over instant ramen, go to bed. Nothing unexpected, nothing new, nothing worthwhile. Not that I could tell Ferguson that.
"It's fine I guess. Can you get out of my bed?" My eyes shift to Al standing in the doorway.
"Why would you let him in this early?" I muster up my best scowl, but he knows there's no real animosity behind it.
"It's eleven man, I tried to keep him out, but he's been up my ass since seven-thirty."
I sigh, shoving Ferguson away and pulling myself out from under my covers. I'm only in boxers, but I stopped caring about how these two saw me quite awhile ago. They were some of the nerdiest guys I'd ever met, they had no room to judge. Ferguson stands up too (with some struggle) and plops himself down again in my desk chair. He scooches towards me, the wheels of the thing whining in disagreement. "So I was thinkin'..."
"That's a first."
He shoots me an offended look, but continues.
"We should go out tonight. You, me, Al, maybe Jackie and Chloe if you're cool with it? We could go to that roller skating rink downtown, the one we had my twelfth birthday party at!"
I pull a grey t-shirt out of my closet. After what happened with Star, I'd ditched the red hoodies. They just weren't me anymore.
"I don't know man, I'm supposed to cover for Caleb at work tonight. He's off on some cruise apparently."
"A cruise? Does this guy think he's Jeff Bezos or what?"
Ferguson cackles at his own joke. Al is still standing in the doorway, leaning up against it. He'd started working out a while back, and it showed. He was hot. Objectively, I mean.
"Come on man, we haven't hung out in so long. Get someone else to cover for him." Ferguson pleads.
"..."
He looks at me expectantly, putting on his best puppy dog eyes.
"Ugh, fine. But only if I can find someone to cover for Caleb."
He squeals in excitement like a five year old girl.
Al smiles. He's been trying to get me out of the apartment for months. He's a good friend, and I definitely don't make it easy. I make a mental note to thank him for putting up with my bullshit, and start phoning my coworkers to see if someone can take over for me.
