Chapter 4
After about fifteen minutes of absolute silence, "We have to get out of here" I spoke, breaking the ice.
My best friend looked up from her painted nails, "Yeah, but how? They could kill us. You know that right?" She shivered at the thought of her life getting taken away.
"They never told us that." I looked at the ceiling, trying to remember if they gave us that kind of information.
Landyn cleared her throat, "They said, severely punished." She gesticulated air quotes to emphasize her words.
"That could mean anything" I replied.
And with that, the huge white door opened revealing a tan skinned, brown haired girl who was about our age. "Hi" she smiled sheepishly. "The other rooms were in full occupancy" she said closing the door behind her slowly. Neither Landyn and I have said a word. Our eyes were just watching her move across the room. "I'm Sophia Smith" she smiled bringing her hand out to me, then Landyn.
"I'm Harlow Shaw and this is my best friend Landyn Carter" I greeted her and then using my thumb to point to Landyn's direction.
"Hey! Nice to meet you" My friend chirped.
Sophia set her stuff down on the farthest bed from us, guessing that the bed in the middle was one of ours. She sat crisscross applesauce on the bed next to the bed we were sitting on. "So how are you guys feeling about this whole situation?" She asked, her British accent prominent.
"Well..." I began, "I'm obviously not over the moon with this idea" I addressed pursing my lips. "Like are we just gonna live like this for the rest of our lives? They honestly could've thought of a better idea than this stupid project" I sighed.
"I mean, any ideas in mind - on how they could've solved this?" Landyn raised her brow. Sophia looking at me anticipating an answer.
"I don't know" I shrugged. "Why didn't they just propose the same one child policy as China did?" I asked as laid on my back. Landyn nodded in agreement.
"I say we figure out a way to leave this island" Sophia grinned. Landyn and I just looked at each other as this was just our topic of conversation before she waltzed in here.
What if the all the other people are thinking the same thing? Damn I hope not because that would make it even harder to escape.
"Yeah and how do we do that?" Landyn said leaning forward, engrossed in this subject.
Sophia didn't say a word as she was deep in thought. I was too; my brain was on overdrive. The last time I thought this hard was when I was taking the SAT."I think we should just go about our days like we usually would and when an idea pops in our head we tell each other" she proposed and we all agreed.
I mean Sophia seems like someone we could trust, she's not a spy or anything.. Or is she? My eyes widened at the idea. Nah, she's not. I shook those thoughts away. I'm just getting really paranoid.
The morning went by quickly and I ended up getting some sleep. Until Susan, the flight attendant barged into our door causing me to jump awake. "Good afternoon ladies" she smiled, both of her hands closed together. I could honestly picture her as someone who is part of a choir group. She looked like she was ready to sing, judging by the way she had placed her hands on top of each other. "Lunch is ready!" She said enthusiastically then closed the door. Her heels clicking against the floor.
I rubbed the sleep off my eyes. "Well, hello sleepyhead" Sophia said putting her book down and standing up.
"Ugh I was hoping it was all a bad dream" I let her know, getting up myself.
The three of us walked downstairs and made our way to the dining area. There were already a few people in the room. We all sat next to each other and helped ourselves. A couple minutes later the whole dining area was filled with all of us 9.
A guy who had dark hair and brown eyes spoke up first. "Hello. I thought that it would be weird if we all lived together but didn't know each others names so yeah. I'm Jake Porter. So hi!" He laughed.
The guy next to him had his brown hair styled in a quiff and waved awkwardly, "Uhm. H-hi?" He stammered, his greeting came out more like a question. "My n-name's Nathan H-Henderson b-but you guys can call me Nate" he introduced himself awkwardly, he scratched the back of his head then diverted his eyes to the food on his plate. He was so shy it was adorable.
After the rest of us spoke we pretty much all got along it was great. This kid Harry dropped a lot of jokes when the room started to grow quiet which essentially led the room to be filled with chatter and laughter once again. His jokes weren't funny it was just the joy that you could see in his eyes when he laughed at his own jokes, provoked the room to laugh along with him.
Lunch was over and we all helped clean up. Since there were 9 pairs of hands working together, you can imagine how fast it was to tidy up.
4 o'clock rolled around and Susan called us all to meet in the living area. We were all sat down waiting for the lady to speak. "As we have observed, you guys are now well rested and ready to work." She said. Upon hearing grunts and complaints from the people in our group, one look at them from her was all it took for them to shut up. "I have a sign up sheet right here for you guys to fill out so you all will be able to chose where you'd like to work" she smiled then continued, "Chose wisely as this will pretty much be your job for the rest of your life until one of the officials decide to let you go. Your first day of work or training begins tomorrow" she informed us. She also left the sign up sheet on the coffee table, along with a pen. The paper floated across the room and once a person signed up, they walked back to their rooms.
When it got to me. I perused the paper looking for the appropriate job.
