"...Where are you, Thom?"
----
1994
Thom gazes out the fogged window of the train, watching as the Oxford countryside passes before his eyes, green grass meeting grey sky on the horizon. Dead, lifeless trees scattered sparsely through the field, due to the constant cold weather of the area around him. His stomach churns when he realizes just how close he is to being home, back where he spent his childhood days running around the empty streets, laughing with friends . He thought back on those day, remembering all the adventures he went on as a kid and into his teenage years where he met more people, the people he so deeply missed.
He wondered how different or the same everything was going to be, but one thing was for certain, no one would be very excited to see him. He had left on a sour note with everyone, picking fights and arguments with the people he was closest to, eventually driving himself mad and to the point of moving away to Paris, France. Worst of all, he never told anyone he was going to leave. The only person he told was his mother, who understood his situation and thought it would be good for him to go off and take a break considering he was 19 and itching to get out of the town he used to call home.
His mother was the only person he kept in touch with anymore, the only person he would tell things too, even if he didn't tell her a lot. He didn't tell her a lot because he knew she would only worry for him. A lot had happened in the past six years and Thom had changed a lot. Unfortunately, he changed for the worse. He was no longer the perky teenager he used to be, he had gone though addiction, depression, relationships that were bad at best and abusive at worst, he had even been homeless for a period of time.
He didn't look any better either. He had gotten even skinnier from lack food intake during those periods of times and was never really able to gain back the little bit of weight he needed to feel and look healthy. His cheekbones were more prominent now, his ribs stuck out and his limbs looked frail. Even his clothes fit more loosely on him now, making him look even smaller.
He knew he had fucked up big time after hs first year in Paris, desperately trying to chase his dream of becoming the next big musician, but nothing ever came of it. His ego was too big when he left, making him think that he could get by in life with no more than his guitar, but his ego dwindled down to almost nothing at this point, which was probably better in the long run.
Leaving so abruptly, Thom knew no one would let him return so easily, except his mother, who had been practically begging for him to move back to Oxford, but he truly thought he could pick his life back up in Paris, with led to more bad decisions made than when he was a teenager, which was really just sneaking out of the house nearly every night to party with friends or snog them senseless.
The train came screeching to a halt, making everyone begin to collect their bags and stand, waiting not-so-patiently for their turn to get off the train. Thom, however, didn't mind standing there as long as he could. His heart was already racing with anticipation of what was to come when returning to his old abandoned life.
Unfortunately for him, it was soon his turn to walk down the thin isle of the train and step off onto the platform, surrounded by dozens of people rushing around to either get to their job to leave everything they even knew behind them. Thom shuddered, almost in disbelief of himself that he would eave in the first place, and even more surprised he had the balls to come back.
He adjusted the guitar case on his back and clutched his bags by his sides and weaved his way through the station, getting a few funny looks as passing people eyes his ratty clothes and strange spiky hair. A bit before he had left Paris he made the spontaneous decision of dying his hair, which he hated at first but he grew to like it over the last few days.
