ZERO / Prologue.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎THE SKY PROPHESIED the birth of a child with a shower of rain and the heavy burden of being called Daeho's Deity after years of drought. She was named Jang Mul, for the very blessing the Lake had granted her.

With her gift of opening the skies and saving the kingdom from drying out, the people of Daeho come to regard her as a miracle Mage. Twenty years after her birth, and the world casts Mul away.

Born to the legendary Gwanju of Cheonbugwan, Jang Gang, whose magical ability far surpassed anyone else his age, Mul was destined for great things. And greatness she did bring, but her insides were knotted and broken, her only purpose to serve the heavens.

Jang Mul was born a defect. She could not do the things everyone else could, although her energy was abundant in ways that even the King could feel. With the coming of the rain, however, Mul awakened a power so unstable that she was not allowed outside.

The Deity mage could not see her own creation come forth.

After the drought of Lake Gyeonchondaeho, the people of Daeho urged Mul to break her wings of power to keep them safe, and she does so, because by then she has already been cast away.

She has no father, no mother, and a sickly brother to take care of. With the burden of knowing she can never be the true Jang family heir, Mul gives up everything — Simply to be loved.

Fated to be wed off to the crown prince as a pact to keep Daeho under the power of the King without a King Star, Jang Gang sells his only daughter in order to save a wife that ultimately dies at the hands of that king he so trusted.

Jang Mul watches her mother give her last breaths to tell her husband the name of her new brother — Jang Uk. She does not glance at Mul, the daughter that she onced loved, because her eyes sparkle for her new child, so frail and beautiful, enveloped in her arms like a bundle of gold.

Mul does not get to say goodbye. But she watches her father ruin her younger brother, and she stands by with nothing more than a clench in her fists. She is only four, but she does not shed tears. She cannot, for their salty bitterness is reserved for a yearly downpour on the day of her despicable birth.

Jang Uk becomes another failure of the Jang household, but at least he has a future waiting for him. He is the true heir, and Mul is nothing but a placeholder, a pillar that holds the family together in the absence of a father.
