I was 16 years old at the time, bored out of my mind. I received a call one night from a family friend, requesting me to house sit for him. I happily agreed with no questions and started to get ready.

Late that night at the family friends house, I was laying on the couch watching TV. My favourite show was playing on a station and I was lost in the emotions of the characters. Around an hour into watching the TV I heard a strange sound come from somewhere in the house. It sounded almost like a harsh screech over and over again. I couldn't identify where it was coming from. I felt tempted to go look for the source of the sound, but a shiver ran down my spine just as I was about to get up. I hesitated, an eerie feeling in my gut that I should not approach the sound.

Now stressed, I decided to call the police. I dialled 911 into my phone and rang the number. Almost immediately an operator picked up and asked for the address of the emergency, as well as a few details. I answered the operator, giving details on the sounds I was hearing. I advised the operator to let the police know to take their time as it was probably nothing. The operator explained to me that the police were two minutes away and were almost here.

When the police had arrived, four officers stayed with me outside while one of them went to investigate the sound. I flinched when I heard yelling, my jaw dropping when I eventually saw a deranged looking man being dragged out of the house. The officer had explained to me that the man was found banging a machete between the washer and dryer in the basement, trying to lure me downstairs.

Curiously, I had asked the officer how he knew that the man was in the basement, to which he replied that when I had hung up the phone with the 911 operator, a second beep was heard.

He had been listening the whole time.
