It was almost noon when they returned to the flats' parking lot hand in hand, happy and smiling. David's smile slowly turned to a frown at the sight of an unfamiliar car parked in the parking lot. The door of the black sedan opened and a woman stepped out when they got near it.
Sarah felt David tense and his hold on her hand tightened at the sight of the woman. She glanced at him and was surprised to see his face cold and his murderous eyes fixed on the woman.
Her brow furrowed and she looked back at the woman quizzingly. She couldn't be Catherine for sure. The woman looked to be middle-aged. She was wearing a floral skirt and a white blouse. Her graying hair had been pulled back into a neat bun and she had little to no makeup. Yet, she was beautiful.
And her gray-blue eyes were fixed on David nervously as she fumbled with her bag.
"David," she spoke, her tone laced with worry and at the same time hope. Her face scrunched a bit and she pursed her lips as tears welled up in her eyes. Her trembling hand went to her heart as if her heart was aching. "Hello, my son."
Sarah gasped and her eyes widened at hearing the woman's words. Glancing between the woman and David, she could now see their slight resemblance.
The woman was his mother.
A smile formed on the woman's pained face as she glanced at Sarah. "Ans you must be Sarah," she stated kindly. "Aiden has told me so much about you."
She then glanced down at the stroller and her hand went to her mouth as tears slipped past her eyes. "Oh, my God." she sobbed. "And she must be my beautiful granddaughter."
The sight and the pain in the woman's eyes were heartwrenching and Sarah found herself at the verge of crying as well.
"What the hell are you doing here?" David forced the words out through his gritted teeth, anger and hatred were dripping from his voice. "I'm going to kill Aiden for giving you the address."
The woman's eyes snapped back to him. "Please, David." she pleaded, taking a step closer. "Please, let me explain. Please let me help you. It's so hard too ..."
"I don't want your fucking help." David snapped angrily, cutting her off. "You lost your chance to help me as a mother when you decided to leave me and Aiden with Dad, letting us suffer in the hands of that cold bastard."
"I couldn't stay with your cruel father." she cried harder, sobs shaking her body. "But I swear I returned to see you two. Your father never let me see you saying you don't want to see me. He never let me near you two, threatening me with his lawyers. Only after his death and talking with Aiden did I realize he never told you about me wanting to see you."
David scoffed and looked away from his mother, his hand running through his hair and tugging at the roots. It broke Sarah's heart to see him like that. He looked tough to others, but she knew he was suffering under that hard exterior.
"I don't give two flying fucks about you." he said coldly. "Go back to the hell you have come from. I have heard that you have remarried again. Congratulations. You can fuck off now."
"David!" cried Sarah, feeling anger bubble in her veins at hearing the cruel words.
"Shut up, Sarah." he snapped, his blazing eyes focused on her. "You know nothing about my past. Nothing about what she had done. So don't start now."
"No. You shut up." she fired back angrily. "You don't have any right to yell at your mother or talk to her with that foul mouth. Maybe I don't know everything, but from what I have heard right now and also from Aiden, it's clear she has fought hard the best she could have for you and her life in front of your father. So the least you can do for her is let her talk and for once listen to her."
