MONDAY, JANUARY 16, 2023

The day after Harper Hayes was laid to rest, there was a storm like no other. The day of the memorial, there hadn't been a cloud in the sky. The sun shone down on that cold January Sunday, as bittersweet as it felt to all those who attended the ceremony. But by Monday, the rain kept pouring down as thunder rolled and lighting lit up the sky. It was as if even the Earth itself took a moment to realize she really wasn't coming back.

Harper was a sweet girl. A rare soul in a place like Saint Colette's School for Troubled Girls. But now she was dead and gone, destined for nothing but a too-early grave.

It was a shame. Everyone thought she was going places. Nothing ever seems to happen the way people think it will.

Miss Eve Kaminsky, Dean of Saint Colette's, walked outside onto the perfectly landscaped courtyard of her school, umbrella carried tightly in her manicured hand. She was a little young for the job, not even 40 yet, compared to her mostly geriatric colleagues. But her blue eyes had a depth to them, a weight that was far beyond her years. And it had only worsened since Harper's body was first found. They scanned around, until her gaze landed on a sleek black car that pulled in just in front of her. After a moment, the backseat door opened, and out stepped a girl with not-quite blonde, not-quite-brunette hair in perfect blowout style waves and sparkling gray eyes. She wasn't yet dressed in the school uniform, consisting of a dark red and black plaid skirt, a maroon blazer and white collared shirt, and knee high socks with black mary janes. Instead she wore an oversized, dark green sweater, baggy light-wash jeans, and sneakers. She stepped forward, suitcase rolling on the wet ground, and together they walked back under the protection of the cement portico.

"Miss June Langley?" the Dean's posh voice asked for confirmation.

The teen smiled somewhat shyly. "That's right."

She returned the smile with a polite one of her own. "I'm the Dean of this school, Miss Kaminsky. It's a pleasure to meet you, June." She handed her a white piece of paper, along with a little bag. "Here is your schedule, and your uniform." Without waiting on a response, she continued, leading the girl into the beautiful, Gothic style building of the main hall. "Now, come this way. You're coming at quite the unusual time for Saint Colette's. Normally we wouldn't be able to let you in after the semester's already started, but we've had an unfortunate loss of one our students last week, and given your mother's urgency── and the quite hefty donation she's made to our school── we have allowed for an exception."

"What happened to her?" June couldn't help but ask.

The Dean debated whether or not to elaborate, but decided the girl would surely hear about it upon meeting other students. "She was murdered."
