Sage was in the middle of unknotting his tangled hair when he heard a loud knock on the bathroom door.
"Sage! C'mon, the daycare opens in 10 minutes, we gotta make sure everything ready!" he heard Max shout from outside. His brother wasn't usually one to care about arriving on time, but ever since a strange group had jumped them last time they were late, he had been very on edge.
Sage tossed the hairbrush into the drawer and ran his fingers through his hair as he exited the bathroom, pulling out as many knots as he could before picking up his bag and an apple to eat along the way.
Max, as usual, wore his very unprofessional outfit and looked tired as hell.
"Not much sleep again, brother? Up late watching those science videos again?" Sage joked as they began to walk to their daycare, taking a bite of the apple he held. Max just shrugged in response, which Sage assumed meant yes.
They traveled in silence, Max glancing around every few minutes, his red eyes scanning each alleyway they passed.
Missing and wanted posters dotted the walls and street signs, and everytime they passed one Sage felt uneasy.
"This is new." Max commented, stopping at two specific posters.
One was a wanted poster, and the one below it was a missing poster.
In the image on the very dirty looking missing poster, there was a young boy who looked around their age with white hair and red and blue eyes, a smile on his face. His name read Reese Kiplin.
On the poster plastered just above it was the same name...but a completely different person.
The image was a very bad camera angle, and was from a distance, but the person in the picture didn't resemble the smiling boy beneath it at all.
This kid had in a contact on his blue eye, making it an unnatural shade of yellow, his other eye irritated and even more red. Scars covered his face and his hair was messily dyed a golden-gray.
"Weird...wonder what happened to the guy..." Sage murmured, tossing his apple into the trash can beside him and pulling his brother away from the posters, hurrying towards their work.
Once they arrived, they began to set up as usual, but Sage couldn't shake his uneasy feeling from that boy from the posters earlier.
Max must have noticed his brother's discomfort, for his put a hand on Sage's shoulder and gave him a small reassuring smile. "Stop worrying, Sage....those posters aren't important to use, what is it our job, so come on, put on your smile..."
Sage sighed, his gaze traveling to meet Max's. "Alright..."
