It has been a few years since So-yong saw Wonsik. She never thought she would see him again, but here he is, standing in front of her by the river. Her heart skips a beat. Her eyes are filled with memories of the past, but she also feels anger and resentment towards him. Both of them remain silent, standing in the place they used to love, now just a part of their memory. Finally, Wonsik breaks the silence.
"Four years already passed since we divorced.''
She remains silent, not wanting to look at him.
He looks at her, his eyes filled with remorse. "I'm sorry," he says softly. "I know I hurt you.''
She replies, her voice soft but firm, "No need to say sorry. The girl you used to know is dead. She is no more.''
He looks down at the ground, unable to meet her eyes. "I wish I could take it back."
"You know what? Life gives us one chance, and that chance never comes back. The decision you made is now permanent. No matter how much you regret it, it's too late," she says firmly.
Wonsik's heart breaks at her words. He feels like he has failed in every way possible. He looks at her with sadness and regret. "I know," he says softly. "I know.''
She changes the topic, not wanting to dwell on the past. "How is your wife now?"
He hesitates. "Her condition is the same as before. The doctors are trying their best, and so am I. I just wish..." He trails off, his eyes filling with tears.
"I hope she gets well soon," she says gently.
Wonsik looks at her. She is still beautiful, just as she used to be. She would look even more beautiful with her long hair down. But her eyes are now emotionless, reflecting the pain and maturity gained over the years.
She suddenly says, "A river runs through it."Wonsik looks at the river.
Yes, she is right. It's just like their lives.
"Anyways, nice to meet you again," she says, finally looking back at him.
"It's nice to see you again, too," he says, his voice cracking. "What...what are you doing lately?"
"I'm busy with my profession."
"Yeah, you were always brilliant," he says, hesitating before asking, "What about your relationship status?"
"I'm still single. But I hope I will be able to change my status soon."
He looks down. "Yeah, you are still young and beautiful. You deserve someone better. I hope you find someone soon."
She nods. "I guess so. This time... this time I will be more careful. People make mistakes once, not always."
Hearing that, Wonsik's heart breaks even more. He failed to give her happiness, returning only pain and sadness.
"Anyways, goodbye," she says with a light smile.
"Goodbye," he says, his eyes lingering on her for a few more seconds. He wants to say something, but he knows he has to let her go.
So-yong starts walking away. These years have been hard on her. She has learned to live with the pain. pain is like her friend now. She never expected to meet him again by this riverside. The weather is cloudy, and today the place feels more peaceful, perhaps because not many people know about it.
As she walks, she notices a man holding a flower bouquet standing a few meters away. She can't see his face. It seems odd that he is alone here with a bouquet.
She says to herself, "Maybe a crazy lover."
