Alyssa sat on the bed of her late friends' bed. She had spent the last week or so crying more than she ever had in her life. Her head ached, and she felt as if she had cried enough tears for an entire lifetime. Her best friend was gone. Buried six feet under in that cold, dead wintery cemetery. No matter how many flowers were left on her freshly covered grave. Kendra was still dead. Her room smelled like her. Floral and woody. The sweet scent brought twists of pain through Alyssa's chest. Memories flashing through her head. The constant reminder that they would never hug, laugh together, or kiss- Alyssa cursed at herself. Why was she still thinking about that? It didn't matter anymore. Their final conversation flashed through her mind.

Flashback

Alyssa leaned toward Kendra, who was studying over some history homework, making notes and trying to memorize that days lesson material. Kendra ignored her. "I still can't believe you forgot your locker combo. You! Kendra Sorenson! Who are you? What did you do with my Kendra?" Alyssa teased.
Kendra raised her eyes and barely smiled, "I've been tired lately, sorry."
Alyssa didn't say anything. Kendra sounded so forced right now. She had been acting weird all of today and yesterday. Was it something she did? They only kissed twice and that was a week ago. She understood that Kendra was busy, but she didn't seem to even want to be here. They had made a habit out of studying after school and they couldn't everyday now that they were highschoolers and it was a little less productive, but they both enjoyed it! Until now, apparently.
"I know that we're supposed to be studying but maybe we could do something else" Alyssa flirted, pulling Kendras' work away from her.
This got a smile from Kendra who looked over at her but didn't move "What would you suggest instead, Lyssa"
The nickname seemed slightly forced, but Alyssa pushed it aside.
"Well, you seem stressed and I'm bored so, naturally, when we are two teenagers alone in a bedroom together..." Alyssa stopped talking, leaning towards Kendra. For a moment Kendra was leaning towards her as well, but less than an inch from each other's lips Kendra shoved Alyssa off the bed, and she hit the floor hard.
"I don't know what you are talking about" Kendra snapped.
"Kendra! Ow! That hurt, what the fuck?" Kendra jumped up and stared down at Alyssa, not bothering to help her.
"Do your best to forget about me, Alyssa Carter."
With that, Kendra stormed out of Alyssas' bedroom, leaving Alyssa alone, and heartbroken.
The next morning, Alyssa couldn't make herself get out of bed and face Kendra after what had happened the evening before. By noon, she got a call from Seth. Kendra had died in her sleep that night. Alyssa was devastated.

Present

She couldn't stop replaying that night in her head. Kendra was her best friend! What happened? She just couldn't figure it out.
At least her and Seth and found some comfort in talking about the events before Kendras' death with each other. Apparently, Kendra was uncharacteristically aggressive and almost violent towards Seth as well. Alyssa told him that they argued and she had yelled at and pushed her but she didn't want Seth knowing about their true relationship, Alyssa wasn't sure what to call their relationship and now she knew she never would. Unfortunately, Seth was just sent away to stay with his grandparents and Alyssa felt more alone than ever. She could talk to Brittany or Trina, but she knew they wouldn't get it. They were never as close to Kendra. They wouldn't understand just how bizarre her behavior really was.
Finally, Alyssa stood up from Kendras' bed, looking around the familiar room. She thought about trying to call Seth to check in, but realized that she didn't have the number of his grandparents place and he didn't have his own phone yet. The Sorensons had always been kind to Alyssa. They were letting her spend as much time in Kendras' old room as she wanted. She headed downstairs to ask Ms. Sorenson for the number.
Ms. Sorenson was visibly tired and sad. The womans' eyes were red and she was wrapped in a fleece blanket, staring off into space silently.
"Ms. Sorenson?" Alyssa prompted quietly
"You know to call me Marla, my dear." The woman responded even quieter. For some reason Alyssa had assumed Kendra's death would revoke her first name basis with Marla Sorenson.
"I was just wondering what the number is for Seth's grandparents? I wanted to check in with him."
"That's very sweet, Alyssa. I'll give it to you, don't worry. You should go visit. It's such a beautiful place." Marla rambled on, "I'll call his grandparents and I'll give you money for a train and some taxis down there. We have all that money saved for Kendra's college and support funds for when she was to move out. I can spare some. Don't worry, dear." Marla burst into tears.
Alyssa put an arm around her, "You don't need to do that Marla."
"No, no I want to. You would like it there, " Marla choked, "Kendra loved it."
Alyssa willed herself not to cry, "Alright, I'll visit."

I'm sorry this is so bad, this is my first ever fanfic and I'm doing this for practice because I have an idea for my own book one day! I just need to get good at writing first, so constructive criticism is appreciated!
