The Carringtons were a noble Scottish family of very high standing in society when the late Duke of Rothesay and Earl of Wessex looked for a wife, he had joined the social season in London and married the then, Miss Jocasta Cowper.
They had had a happy enough marriage, and sired three children, the oldest James, had inherited his father's titles at only six and ten, and had to take responsibility for his siblings and mother. His younger brother Arthur, as a second son, had very much the liberty to enjoy his freedom, and frequented many artistic and scandalous establishments, for a man of his standing.
What both brothers seemed to agree on was that their youngest sister, Elisabeth, who was debuting in the 1813 season, would not marry anyone undeserving of her, in matters of character and rank.
The Matriarch Carrington was to have a busy season indeed.
