I like pudding.
Uraraka blinks large, earnest eyes.
"Pudding?"
Adzumi shifts, adjusting her hold on the pillow clutched to her chest. Nodding happily, she repeats the statement.
"I wanna be a hero because I like pudding," She thought for a moment, then added, "And other people all over the world love it too."
The girl across from her tilts her head, expression hesitant.
"So you want to be a hero... because of a dessert?" Uraraka reiterated for the third time. Her face yelped 'save me' and 'what kind of person is this' louder than a cat during bath time.
"That's the short answer, at least," Adzumi sighed and looked up to the barren, cream-colored ceiling of her new apartment. She stretched her arms up, pillow falling with a soft thump. Yawning, she glances over at her dumbstruck friend. Her round cheeks had gotten even pinker through the afternoon and evening, flushed with the satisfaction of conversation and convenience store snacks. After finding Unit 323, she and Uraraka had planned to unpack all her luggage, however were sidetracked after discovering a bag filled to the brim with cheap foods and bubbly drinks. It was the last day before the academic year began, and, casting sheepish looks at each other, they had decided to sit and have a toast to new beginnings.
"What's your reason?" Uraraka looked down, a flash of embarrassment skipping across her face, before she answered,
"Well, um. My family, I guess. I want to be able to help them."
"Ohhh, that's too sweet of you," Adzumi leaned back, reaching for a fizzy drink teetering precariously on the edge of her nightstand, "I mean, if I had to be honest, it never occurred to me before that my family could be placed in danger by villains. Like, it was always a statistic or possibility, but it never seemed real. You know?" Uraraka nodded, padded fingertips fidgeting.
"Yep! Now that I'm a student at U.A., I want to be able to protect everything I love and care about. I still don't really understand the pudding, though. Sorry..."
"Don't worry about it."
As Uraraka continued on to other various topics, Adzumi listened and answered happily. Their conversation lasted hours, and once the sun set, Uraraka wished Adzumi a good night, and bounced away to her own unit nearby. After waving goodbye, Adzumi shut her door with a muffled click.
Maybe I can unpack later.
She assured herself she'd fully unpack sometime this week.
Lies.
After dragging herself through an abbreviated night routine, Adzumi stumbled into bed. Switching her night lamp off, she reached over to the nightstand, motioning into the dark for her phone. As if on cue, a message lit up the screen, and Adzumi's fingers closed around the rugged case.
1 new message . . .
