Forever by you

Kitsu and Akina's school let out early today for their annual inspection, so I was here, outside the sun glaring down on me. The summer heat is letting on, and all of us are sweating, the sun baking our skin gently. Kitsu finishes the last of her ice cream, before looking up at me pleadingly. I sternly stare at her, and while we begin a staring contest, Akina slyly grabs my cone, and the girls are running before I can blink.

"Guys! That wasn't fair!"

Laughter finds my ears, and I can't help but grin. The girls have slowly come back to a form of acceptance over the year, and even though it still hurts that she's gone, we've been working on being a better family.

A lot has happened in the past year. Eos died, and for a while, it felt like we were drowning. Even though she died, her presence was still heavy in our hearts, and while the girls got past it quicker, I tried to keep that feeling, in order to punish myself for letting her suffer. Eventually, Hahaoya drew the line between coping and utter foolishness, and we slowly began to try to resew our seemingly broken family. Our small apartment now has orange tulips on every counter, dresser, and table, and when we finished reading through Eos' notes, and folding them, we realized we had one thousand.

The legend said one thousand cranes, yet for us, it was one thousand orange tulips, folded by a grieving family, to make a wish, to repair ourselves, but keep Eos with us. The girls know their wishes came true. They won't tell me, saying that if I know what they wished for, it will be undone, and what happened is too good to undo. I wished for our family to be sewn back together with Eos in between the shambles, and by watching the girls run through the flowers, I know that my wish came true. Eos rests in every small corner of our hearts, building us back up, and constantly supporting us. She never truly left. She was always there watching over us, making sure we wouldn't fall down the cliff as we tried to regain our balance. As I run to catch up to the girls, I see her, smiling, looking so proud as her hair blows shining bronze, and she slowly fades away.
