A new day. Another reminder to the constant responsibilities and troubles that rack a person's mind. I was in thought as I walked steadily to the school grounds.
It was an old day secondary school, with grass cut low and pathways swept. It was very neat and beautiful, with trimmed flower hedges and beautiful pot plants and vases. The buildings and walls wore new coats of white paint; The tall erected buildings. At the back was land used as the school farm which had different crops and another space for animals.
I walked to my class. It was painted cream and it had a wide space. My class, SS3A was one of the biggest classes with 46 students and from it emerged the school prefects.
Amanda and Linda were seated, discussing and writing as always before class. "What do we have this morning?" I asked, expecting an answer. They turned around, making it to their school bags. "I've got the timetable, let me check", said Linda. "I also do too", said Amanda,"I think we have math first". I took my seat in the middle row. We had an equal number of boys and girls so a boy and girl sat together. I sat with Charles; 17 years old. Dark in complexion, tall, well built though he was a little slim. He had a nice smile that always assured me. Anytime he flashed his pearly whites he felt good about a situation. And it made me feel good too.
"Hey Lucy, how are you?", said his voice, his usual saying to me before class.
"I'm doing well", I responded and tried to ignore the limb the lump in my throat. "Alright, we're have math first, then literature while science students will have chemistry" he listed and gave me a megawatt smile as I remained calm, trying to remain not to jump up and shout "Yayyyyy!""Are you okay?" He asked, staring at me. "Yes, I'm quite alright" I replied cooly. My heartbeat made the sounds of rain hitting a window. He gave me a thumbs up and whispered "are you sure you're okay?". "Yes really. Now stop or we'll get punished". Our math teacher had begun,"Now, we are all going to find X in this equation. You see, when X is parallel to Y and-" he ranted. Charles whispered" Oh come on, I'm trying to cheer you up". "Thanks" I replied, "but I'm alright".
He stared at me and smiled. I tried resisting but I found myself smiling too.
He helped me take some notes, got me up to speed on some assignments and projects, gave me a pat and thumbs up and made his way to the door."Senior! Senior!" cried out a little junior boy to me. Most of them didn't know our names so we were addressed as Senior.
He ran to me and exclaimed,"Miss faith is looking for you. She wants to see you in her office now!" What had I done that she called for me? By character, I'm known as one of the most quiet and reserved people in the school. I went with the boy to her office. Her office. It was a well lit room with two desks and two ceiling fans. She sat in the left, using her phone torch to see something she was scribbling on to a paper. She handed it to me and muttered," take this lapsed and leave immediately, please. I'm having a very large headache and I don't want any noise here". I always felt like she experienced more than five moods a day so I was never sure which one I'd meet.
I left her office, skimming the paper. It read, 'School fees: $1500 remainder'. I sighed and tossed the paper into my bag.School had dismissed. I walked out of the compound not minding......anything. All the thoughts and incidents of yesterday came crashing into my mind. And my headache increased. Again. I leaned against the wall of a shop selling food and sighed.
I was hungry. So hungry that my stomach noises sounded like a jet engine. I wasn't with much money, so I tried to hold my hunger till I got home. I'd probably have something else to eat like rice or beans or I don't know.....anything.Sometime, about five minutes later," I'll just have two sandwiches please", I said to the server in the store.
I couldn't hold that hunger anymore, nope not one moment more........
