AFTER MADI'S HOUSE, the boys make it back home, tired from all the swimming they did for hours. nick thought about when the best time would be to leave, not trying to gain any suspicion from his family.
he knew his mom was also close with eliana and her mother. when nick, matt and chris were 5 years old, they were playing outside when they noticed a new family moving in a few houses down.
the night after, marylou had invited the new neighbors over for dinner, which was when the triplets first met eliana. quickly, they all became close friends. from playing outside to going to school together, each were attached at the hip.
nick slid out of the house, luckily without waking anyone. he wasn't sure what to expect by just walking up to the house but he knew he needed to do something about the growing curiosity in his body.
ELIANA WAS SITTING ON THE COUCH, waiting for her mom to get home in time for dinner. cooking was also something she loved to do in past time, she knew she was good at it too. cooking for the people she loved and seeing them enjoy her food always fluttered her heart, which sounds stupid but the saying, 'food is the way to the heart', seems true.
she heard a knock at the door, which was weird since obviously, her mom wouldn't knock on her own door and she wasn't expecting anyone. hesitantly, eliana arose from the couch and walked to the door.
eliana opened the door to be faced with one of the last people she was expecting."i bet you didn't think i knew you were back." nick said to her, a hint of annoyance in his voice.
"i-uh.." was all eliana could get out of her mouth. she really didn't know what to say. she noticed nick looked the same as he did before. the same brown hair, blue eyed best friend she once knew everything about.
eliana felt startled by the sudden confrontation with nick. the urge to hug him was unbearable but she knew that wasn't her place at the moment.
"do you want to come in?" eliana asked him, hoping he'd say yes, giving her the opportunity to explain her sudden absence. nick nodded his head and walked in after her.
"so when did you get back?" nick broke the silence that was amongst them. "last night."
eliana felt like hours had passed before someone had the courage to speak up. before she left, there was never any angst or uncomfortable silence between them. now that's all the meeting was faced with.
"i think it's time for you to explain." nick says to her, waiting for what she was about to say.
"it's going to take me time to talk about all of this." eliana took a deep breath, giving herself enough courage.
"well it was 2 years ago. after school i had come over and was hanging out with chris when it was time for me to go home.when i came home, i said goodnight to my mom and went to my room. i heard my mom talking to someone on the phone and it sounded really bad. i was awakened by my mom at like 3 am, telling me i had to pack a bag and we had to leave. i was in danger, nick."
eliana finished explaining from the beginningand the look on nick's face was nothing short of shock. eliana hadn't ever had to explain the situation to anyone out loud before and she realized the crazy 2 years she went through.
"you were in danger? how?" nick had so many questions flooding his mind, he barely knew where to start.
"someone wanted me dead."
