Have you ever looked up and down at that freaky girl at your school and thought she belonged in a mental hospital? Have your teachers ever talked about that mental hospital in town that one of the past students were sent to? You and your friends joke about it, but did you ever think it would happen to you?

Neither did Maya Adam, a thin eighth grader with dark brown hair and light brown eyes. She's sweet and caring, and has been top at Lakeland Middle School ever since her first year. She doesn't have to worry about all the make-up, or bathing suits, or being popular, because her friends are all that matter.

One perfect day in Syracuse, New York, Maya was lounging at home in her two story house, preparing for a normal, boring day of winter break. All her friends were out of town and her parents were working and no one was home.

And then the cops showed up. For no reason. They took her. And they didn't put her in jail.

They put her in the Keller Mental Institute.
