Circus of the Midnight Hour

Chapter 1

Come one come all to the Midnight Arcanum~

Rang out the loud voice of the ringmaster over the speakers.Avery twirled a piece of her flyaway hair around her finger.She was rather nervous.This was Avery's first time visiting the Midnight Arcanum.She had heard of the rumors about the ringmaster and it shook her to the core.But despite her fear,Avery made her way through the jostling crowd and towards the tent.

The music overhead was quite loud but she didn't mind.Avery simply took her seat and gazed around.The inside of the Big Top was unusual.The roof was like a night sky with thousands of stars and constellations.She knew this was just the design of it but it was still magical.Avery took notice of one of the circus members peaking out from behind the curtain.It was a girl probably around 17 years old,which was only a few years older than Avery who was 14, with white hair tied into two high pigtails decorated with scrunchies and colourful bows on either side.Her face was decorated with clown makeup but instead of it being very "goofy" it was more elegant in a way.She quickly ducked back behind the curtain however.

More people started to take their seats which distracted Avery.The chatter of the audience and the circus music was making it hard for Avery to focus on the smaller details of the circus.Another face peaked through the back curtain.This one was male.A bit older than the clown girl but still in his teens.He had curly brown hair and lightly tanned,freckled skin.He grinned and ducked back behind the curtain in a similar fashion.

The audience was soon fully settled,popcorn and treats in hand.The clown girl peaked out once again,accompanied by someone looking similar to the boy from earlier. Perhaps his brother.They gazed out over the crowd and noticed Avery staring at them before quickly ducking back behind the curtain for one final time.
The lights focused on the ring of the Big Top,where the circus members would soon be performing.

Avery fidgeted with her hands before gazing down at the curtain for a final time.A final face could be seen peering mysteriously through a crack in the curtain.A pale face with grey piercing eyes and ringlets of dark hair that fell around her face.The curtain shut once again.

It was almost time for the show as it started at 5pm.Avery was more nervous than ever,her heart pounding in her chest.The chatter and circus music were loud but not loud enough to drown out the booming announcement that would come at 5.Five-fifty eight.Two minutes left till the show and the lights started dimming.A blanket of quiet fell over the audience.Five- fifty nine.One minute left.
The announcement boomed through the circus,shaking Avery to the core.
