The Pearl That Nearly Cost Percy An Arm And A Girlfriend

Annabeth was sitting on the edge of the canoe dock. Alone. And she was pissed.

Percy had sent a younger camper over an hour ago to nervously mumble at her that he was waiting for her on the dock, and to come quick, he had something to show her.

Well, here she was. Where was Seaweed Brain?

Fuming, she checked her watch again and stamped her foot in frustration.

The water below her started to bubble. Instictively, Annabeth pulled out her knife and took a battle stance, glaring suspiciously at the swirling vortex forming at her feet. Taking a step back, she went over everything it could be in her brain, quickly devising a strategy against each one. She'd reached the fifth possibility when a mop of dark hair surfaced.

Completely dry.

"Seaweed Brain!"

"Hello to you too," Percy smirked happily as he rode a jet of water out of the lake and back onto the deck. He couldn't resist splashing her, which meant of course that she punched his arm.

"Whoa, whoa there, Smart Girl! You've still got a knife and I don't feel like being a kabob today!" She growled and put it back in her belt, punching him again.

"What were you even doing in there? You called me over here an hour ago." He blinked. "Really? An hour?"

"Yes, stupid! What was so dang important?" He smiled sheepishly and held up a pearl for her to take.

"I...found this, and I wanted to give it to you."

She stared at him. "You found it so you went for a swim," she said flatly.

"Uh..." he shuffled awkwardly, his cheeks tinting pink. "I may have dropped it."

She rolled her eyes and took the stupid pearl, slipping it into her pocket and wondering idly if she could drill a whole through it to put it on her camp necklace. Then she turned and walked away.

Percy followed a moment later.

"What? No 'Thanks, Percy'? No 'You're the best boyfriend ever'? Gimme some credit here, Annabeth!"

"Not on your life, Jackson."

He grinned, glad she was so pleased with his present.
