My father leaned back in his seat and didn't say a word. He folded his arms across his chest while he looked between the four of us, and none of us looked him in the eye while we stayed silent and waited for him to say something, anything that would be able to break the silence that had fallen on us.
Finally, my father sighed and shook his head before he cleared his throat and leaned back in his seat. "You would have been able to survive, Ashlyn," he said coldly while he dipped his head closer to his chest. "That is what I h-"
"But that doesn't mean anything, Alpha," I said with a shake of my head, interrupting him.
My father growled in warning and bared his teeth while he narrowed his eyes, but he didn't say a word while he waited for me to finish my thought because I would have never interrupted him like that if I didn't have something else to say.
I bit back a sigh and cleared my throat, shifting in my seat and pressing my lips into a thin line. "I would have been able to survive, but I would not have been in a position to give them the life that they need, that they deserve."
"But you would have had a pack with you for you to lean on, Ash," Max said softly, and we looked at him. "She has a pack for her to lean on, now that she lives here and not with her father."
"But that is because her father is dead," I replied coldly and folded my arms across my chest and pursed my lips in annoyance.
I cleared my throat and scowled and narrowed my eyes while I looked at him, and Max looked at me and pressed my lips into a thin line. "I killed him, Maxwell."
Max nodded and bit back a small sigh while he slowly nodded. He moved a hand through his hair before he shook his head and cleared his throat, setting his jaw. "I know, Alpha," he said softly. "And I am sure that she is happy about it."
I hope so... I bit the inside of my lip and shifted in my seat, praying that she was happy and relieved that she was free from that man she called a monster.
But what was going to happen to her now..?
Rob cleared his throat and shifted in his seat, and we looked at her. "What is going to happen to them now?" Rob asked, his voice barely above a whisper. His cheeks turned red when he saw all of us staring at him, and he moved closer to his mate. "I mean, where is she going to live?"
"Here," my father said as soon as I opened my mouth to say something. He scowled and narrowed his eyes while he looked at me, and I closed my mouth and pursed my lips in annoyance. "She is going to live here in the pack house with us."
I bit back a sigh and shook my head. "She doesn't want to, Alpha," I said coldly. "Georgie and I have already talked about it. She doesn't want to be considered a burden."
And she doesn't want to make you mad at her or hate her because she is my mate, I added silently, pressing my lips into a thin line.
Max bit back a small sigh and shook his head. "She is not going to be a burden," he said softly. "Jen and I want to help her with h-" He caught my look and stopped talking mid sentence. "Oh."
He looked at my father before he looked at me, and a look of understanding flashed through his eyes. "Ok." He slowly nodded and pressed his lips into a thin line.
"What?" my father asked and set his jaw while he looked between us before he looked solely at me. "What is going on? What are you two "talking" about, Ashlyn?"
Max hesitated and looked at my father before he looked at me, pain and sadness filling his eyes. He did not say a word while he looked at my father again.
