Jan shook her head. She just couldn't fathom it. How could the box have just vanished? Could it have been picked up by some truck? No Jan would have seen that. Maybe she really was dreaming. Jan sighed and went back to the bookstore. She flipped the open sign to close before loading the rest of the books onto the wagon and pulling them to the back room.
Jan groaned upon entering. A clutter of books were about the workspace. Her co-workers were the worst slobs. The two of them only helped on weekends, but she always ended up cleaning up after them the whole week. Jan started clearing the books. One of her old favorites caught her eye: "Gideon the Cutpurse" by Linda Buckley-Archer. Jan glanced at the clock. It was only ten thirty; a few chapters couldn't hurt. Jan picked up the book and sat on the floor against a wall.
Jan read the back cover like she always did before reading or rereading a book. Part way through she thought of the funny blue box. Maybe it was a time machine like in the book. No, no that would be ridiculous. Jan cleared her head and began to read.
About two pages in Jan leaned into her lap. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the flip phone. She turned it over in her hand then flipped it open. Rolling her thumb over the keys she tried to think. After a bit her thoughts relieved her to a simplest solution to her curiosity: repair the books to call the Doctor. Then perhaps she could follow him inside that blue box.
Groaning Jan forced herself up and set to work.
