Chapter 5: The Schedule

Caught off-guard by Cat's question, I almost choke on my tea.

My sex life, or complete lack of one, had never been a subject of conversation before I agreed to this whole arrangement. But it's the reason the agency worked so quickly to set up an appointment between me and the Cromwells.

I squirm, then finish putting on the smartwatch to buy time. In my peripheral vision, I spot Devin rolling his eyes.

Cat raises her eyebrows, waiting for my response.

I nod. "Yes. Still." I emphasize that last word maybe a little too much, but the question stung and was unnecessary.

Cat ignores my little dig, though I doubt she noticed it at all. "Perfect. Well, it's nearly three now which means you've got a nap coming up. So, I think we're done here."

She rises from her chair and with a perfunctory wink for me and a seemingly forced air kiss to Devin, she's out the door without another word.

I sit there, cup and saucer in hand, stunned at what just took place. I thought I was coming in for a welcome tea party and instead I get a lecture and an interrogation, or at least that's what it felt like on my end.

Unsure whether I should follow Cat out, I pause for a second. Devin rises first and sounds almost apologetic as he says, "Charles will show you back to your room."

On his way to the door, he turns back and gives me a sexy grin. "You better get moving, it's nap time. Don't want to get off your schedule." And then he's gone.

Charles waits expectantly, so I stand up and set my cup and saucer on the table.

"This way, miss."

The minute he turns his back to me, I grab the closest sandwich and a couple of pastries, dropping them into my boutique bag with the smartwatch box so Charles doesn't see.

So Cat is a control freak and Devin secretly laughs about it. What have I gotten myself into here?

Back in my room, I quickly eat my late lunch and am delighted to find that every bite is amazing. I don't know why I'm surprised, because it makes sense that absurdly wealthy people could have the best chefs around. I'm sad when I get to the last bite, but at least now I can make it to dinner.

My phone beeps and I look to see an event from my calendar, alerting me to what I already know: it's nap time.

I release an exaggerated sigh, then lie on the bed, still in my sundress, and try to take a nap. But it's hopeless.

At least they can't tell if I'm asleep or not.

I glance down at the smartwatch now on my wrist.

Can they?

Either way, I'll just lie here for an hour. I think about Josh and I can't help but smile a little. I already miss him.

I'm starting to realize that he was right about all of this being weird. Hell, I'm not even close to being pregnant yet, and Cat already has me on a strict schedule and an even stricter diet. I'm giving away an entire year of my life to these people.

And how much more controlling will Cat get once I am pregnant?

Maybe I made a mistake. I thought I'd have lots of free time to paint, but now it seems as if Catriona is hellbent on monitoring every little thing I do.

Maybe I should try to get out of this. It's not too late. But then there's the little matter of Grace's tuition, which I've already told her is covered 100 percent by the academy. If I were to quit this job...
