Noah's POV -The following days were a whirlwind of activity as Mabel and I worked together to unpack her belongings and make our home truly ours. Each item finding its place in drawers and shelves next to mine felt like a silent declaration of the bond we shared.
As Mabel settled into the cosy nooks of our home, I found myself filled with a sense of contentment and warmth. Watching her curl up on the sofa, lost in the pages of a book with her headphones in, brought a smile to my lips. She seemed more at ease, more herself, and it filled me with joy to see her embracing our shared space.
That was until our small haven was interrupted by a sharp knocking at the front door. Mabel jumped, I heard her heartbeat pick up and watched as her chest began to rise and fall with her laboured breaths. I quickly approached her shaking form, squatted down in front of her and soothed my hands up her legs.
"You're okay, wee girl, you're safe here with me." I continued to soothe her, ensuring my touch was soft and comforting. Relief washed over me as I saw her body gradually calm and her breathing even out. I gave her a warm, genuine smile. "I'm proud of you, baby."
Her cheeks lit up at the praise, and I couldn't help but smirk. I was tempted to lean in and catch her lips with mine—it had been far too long—but another persistent knock rattled the door, and I huffed in frustration.
I stood quickly, smoothly running a hand over Mabel's hair and watched as her eyes closed with a soft smile on her face, one that I gladly echoed before my hands left her to go see just who the fuck was at my door.
I kept the door bolted as I looked through the peephole, a small growl rumbling in my throat. My pack had no fucking manners. I quickly unbolted the locks and cracked the door open, not allowing any of the fifteen people standing on my doorstep inside.
My sister, Angel, frowned at my unwelcoming stance. "Hey big brother, are you not going to let us in? We brought presents for your new mate."
I sighed and rubbed a hand over my face. "Thank you, everyone, but you know what she's just went through. She's still a little jumpy. I don't know if this is the right time to host a initiation gathering for her."
All pack eyes blinked up at me. Not everyone was here, mainly my friends, family, and higher-up wolves. Magnus had even made a show of coming, which made me smile at the respect he was obviously showing towards my mate despite her being human.
Not that wolf and human mating's were forbidden, but were often frowned upon by older wolves. It was an old stance that we younger wolves were more than happy to look passed, considering a lot of pairings were human and wolf.
Magnus opened his mouth, likely to tell everyone to turn around and go home, but he was interrupted by the low sound of someone clearing their throat. I turned quickly to look at Mabel, who was now peeking over my shoulder at the pack. Her delicate hand touched my shoulder, and I turned fully towards her, blocking her from their view.
"Noah, it's okay, I promise. It would be nice to see everyone again and have some company." Her tone was soft, but her eyes held a hint of determination. She wanted to prove that she was okay, that she trusted how safe she was with me.
In an attempt to tease and settle her a bit more, I cocked my eyebrow at her. "Am I not good enough company for you, mate?"
My ice-breaking attempt was a success. Mabel giggled at me before edging the door open more, though not enough for everyone to squeeze past as I held the door steady in one hand, resisting her attempts.
I lowed my voice and dropped my head so that my lips were level with her ear. "Are you sure baby? No one is forcing you, I can tell them all to fuck off right now." Mabel shook her hair, her hair tickling the stubble lining my face. She tilted her head slightly and pecked her lips against the corner of mine.
