"Don't die before I see you again, okay?"

★————————————★

Penny sighed, her dark woolen coat wrapped tight around her. The air was cold again, the winter season having decended over London. Christmas cheer covered the streets each way she turned, though for once the holiday season felt chillier.

It was certainly lonelier.

Her parents had come and gone back to America, their plane already landed, likely they already had returned to their cozy home, her mother would have decorated before they left, and her father would be working on a crossword, pretending like he felt nothing.

She didn't particularly want to stay in her apartment at the moment, all those depressing feelings felt all the more real in there, and as removed from the cheer as she felt, it was nice to see so many happy strangers.

With no real direction, she wandered aimlessly from store to store, not paying much attention to the items on display. A buzzing from her pocket interrupted her wanderings, and, after much debate, she answered.

"Oh, Penny! Are you there? It's Minnie." A papery voice on the other end spoke.

"Oh. From the funeral, right?"

"That's exactly it!" She said, a bit too cheerfully. "Now, I wouldn't usually come to a young dear like you with something like this, what with how busy you must be, but I've been told to cast a wide net."

"That's...fine." Penny's brows pinched in confusion. "Sorry, what's this about?"

"I'm on the lookout for a man." Minnie whispered conspiratorially. "Tall and skinny in a brown suit, spiked hair? Spotted him?"

"No, I'm afraid I haven't." Penny sighed tiredly, half listening half watching carolers across the street.

"The other bit. Say the other bit!" Another voice hastily spoke.

"Oh, what was it again?" Another pause as the sound of turning paper came through the phone speaker. "Ah-hah! A police box, a bit more my generation but if you've seen it, a blue one, give me a ring."

"A blue police box?" The conversation was thrust into focus at the recognition. "You're looking for the Doctor?"

"A doctor, yes!" Minnie sounded excited. "You've seen 'em then?"

"No, no not in a while." Penny realized it as she spoke, only adding to her melancholy. "But if you happen to find him, let me know."

"Alright, alright. I'll add you to the list." Minnie joked some of the quieter voices laughing along.
