KAIRO

"There's this small party my roommate is throwing, a paint night she's calling it. You have to bring your own canvas and supplies. But I was wondering if you wanted to come?" Sonni asked over a steaming cup of pumpkin spice coffee.

"When is it?" I take a sip of my Iced Americano.

"Tonight." She said, "I know it might be last minute, but I totally understand if you can't make it."

"Is it okay if I bring Noah?"

A barista calls out someone's name over the vibrating and grinding of an espresso machine.

"The more the merrier." She smiled.

Sonni rips up a napkin into little pieces creating a neat pile. She did this the first time we grabbed coffee together. I wasn't sure if this was her way of coping when she was nervous. We sat in the coffee shop talking for twenty minutes until the conversation faded out and a silence we didn't want to disturb or force anything.

It made me think of Noah and how our conversations, most of the time, would find a comfortable silence. Most of the time, I spoke nonverbally with Noah. Playfully hitting that turned to subtle touch where I would linger too long and he never noticed, and if he did, he never said anything but gave into my little touches.

With Sonni, I hadn't quite figured out our dynamic. Her friends called us Kason, which was our shippedname. They raved about how well we looked good together. Sonni loved the attention and I couldn't quite understand what I wanted from her.

Unlike Noah, I was open to having more friends. I wanted to invite others into our space slowly. Arjun was first. I trusted him around Noah knowing he wouldn't do or say anything that made Noah question himself.

Arjun is a sweet guy who wouldn't hurt a fly. But he had a mean uppercut.

Twenty minutes later, I'm in one of the art department's study rooms with Noah. He has a test this afternoon and I had time to kill before my lecture at 3 pm.

"Did you get your locs retwist?"

Noah turns a page in his textbook. "Yeah, earlier this morning. They look fresh, huh?"

"So fresh I got to lock you up. The girls are going to be losing it over you, man." I teased him.

"You know I gotta step with this retwist." He grins.

"Speaking of stepping. There's this paint night tonight I was invited to and I want you to come with me."

Noah stops writing in his notebook. He looks across the table at me. "Who invited you?"

"Sonni."

"I got plans tonight." Noah goes back to writing.

"No, the hell you don't," I said. "It's just her, her roommate, and some other girls."

A small sigh leaves him. 'There's Arjun, now Sonni."

"Okay?"

"I ain't tryna be buddy, buddy with any of them."

"They're good people."

Noah puts in his earbuds ignoring me, hitting the volume up so loud I could hear J.Cole's No Role Modelz. I take out my phone sending Noah a Text.

Me: Plz come with me.

My pretty boi: Eat my ass.

Me: Here? right now? 😏

My pretty boi: u sus asf.

Me: But ur the 1 who told me to eat ur ass...so who the sus 1 here homie?
