“You busy tomorrow night?”
I nearly jump out of my skin. Damn it, I zoned out again. Jenny said that if I keep zoning out and falling asleep on the job then she’ll fire me. I cannot afford to be fired.
“Excuse me?” I say.
Kim snaps her gum. “I asked if you were busy tomorrow night,” she repeats. “Also, I’ll get a grande half-sweet vanilla latte.” I type in the order.
“That’ll be four seventy-eight.” She hands me worn out five dollar bill and I give her the remaining twenty-two cents due. “Your drink will be ready at the counter in a few moments,” I say, nodding in the direction of the counter. She doesn’t move from her spot. “Uhh, Kim?” Still, she doesn’t move. “You kinda need to move so I can help the next customer.” Still nothing. A bald middle-aged man standing behind her rolls his eyes after checking his watch.
“You still haven’t answered my question,” she finally says.
I groan. “Yes, Kim, I am busy tomorrow night,” I snap.
“How come?”
“JUST LEAVE!” All eyes are suddenly on me. Oh shit. I did not mean to yell it that loudly. As if I haven’t had enough pep talks from Jenny, I most likely just earned myself yet another one. Fantastic. Just what I need.
“Geez, you didn’t need to yell,” Kim says before casually walking away to retrieve her drink.
“Next,” I say weakly.
