The Day It All Became Clear
Sitting with a book open on her lap, she was shielded by the tree from the blinding sun. The book was open halfway and she was completely submerged in the story. Curtained by her curly brown hair, she was hidden from the world around her, totally unaware of all signs of magic. She didn't notice the sparkly dots flying around or the whispering of fairies. Definitely not the man in the shadows. The gentle morning breeze swept through the vibrant green leaves on the beautiful tree. In the distance, a swing squeaked, and light footsteps could be heard. Oblivious to another presence, she turned another page of her book. She still didn't notice the boy, who was taking in the beauty of the park, as she scanned the page with her bright green eyes. She didn't realise he was now slowly lowering himself to the ground in the space next to her. His soothing voice, laced with a hint of English accent startled her.
"Hey."
The girl jumped, and started to back away. Her mouth was open, eyes wide and she looked terrified. The boy stared at her in confusion, then caught on as he realised she was scared.
"No, I won't hurt you. Can you tell me your name?"
She considered her answer. Tell him or not? She somehow started to think about that day. Then she realised, it happened exactly a year ago. June 21st. After that day, she never saw her -.
"My name is Christopher, but call me Chris." The boy decided to speak again, but he sounded like he was talking to a wounded deer. "I like reading too, my favourite author is J.K. Rowling. Yes, I know Harry Potter is too childish for a fourteen year year old, but I don't care."
At the mention of her favourite character, the pretty girl perked up. She decided that she could trust Chris.
"Charlotte."
Her voice surprised Chris, and her American accent made him smile. He asked her, confused,
"Charlotte?"
"Yes, that's my name." She answered, then smiled too.
"So, dearest Charlotte," Chris started, making his voice sound all posh, "what book us thy gentle lady reading?" He may have been trying to be funny, but he actually wanted to know what she was reading.
"Guess." She stated simply. Her insecurities vanished, as she smiled wider.
"Okay. The book is thick, so it must be something like..." He paused to think. "The Hunger Games?"
"Nope!" Charlotte grinned, while popping the p.
"Divergent?" She shook her head. "The Fault In Our Stars?" She shook her head again. "The Outsiders?" Now, he was just randomly saying any book he had read in school. "A View From The Bridge? Of Mice And Men? Romeo and Juliet? Wait!" Chris paused for effect, grinning from ear to ear. "Don't tell me you're reading... HARRY POTTER?!" She nodded, her grin matching his. "You are now my favourite person ever!!!" He exclaimed and stuck out his arms as if to hug her, then remembered hat she could get scared, so he decided not to. Charlotte, however, jumped on him and tackled him in a hug. All memories of the past year wiped, as if by obliviate.
"I have to ask you a very serious question if you want to be friends." She proclaimed after she pulled away from the hug. Her excellent drama skills came into use as she changed her face from a happy smile to a solemn expression. A Sirius expression perhaps, she thought.
"What house are you in?" She finally asked, once she was sure that Chris believed that it was a serious matter. But, that didn't last long, because as soon as she said it, Chris' eyes softened and suddenly, he started laughing. Charlotte joined in and they say there for what seemed like minutes, but could have only been seconds, laughing.
"I thought you were serious!" Chris managed to choke out, in between deep breaths to stop laughing.
"I most certainly am not Sirius! He's a man! Do I look like a man to you?" She couldn't resist the pun.
"No, of course not!" Chris replied quickly, and Charlotte got the impression that he didn't want to offend her. But why would he not want to offend her? All everybody ever wanted to do was to hurt her, physically and emotionally. At school, and at home. But it wasn't her father's fault, it was the alcohol. Ever since she died, he always was under the influence of alcohol.
"Okay, I believe you. Now, for the question. What house are you in?"
"Gryffindor." He couldn't help but pull out an invisible sword and say, "Where the brave dwell at heart." This made her laugh.
"Alright, James, do you want to know what house I'm in?" He nodded, so she continued. "Hufflepuff!" This reminded him of a video he'd seen a few days ago on YouTube, so he decided to say Dumbledore's line.
"What the hell is a Hufflepuff?" This made Charlotte giggle and she replied with a wide grin, putting her hand up, like Cedric did in 'A Very Potter Musical'.
"Hufflepuffs are particularly good finders!"
"Now that's cleared up, we can go to Pigfarts!" His over-exaggerated fake Draco Malfoy voice made her laugh even more. Without really thinking, he suddenly stood, pulled Charlotte up and they started to skip around the tree, shouting "We're off to see Pigfarts, the piggies the farts around!" Charlotte thought about the day last year, once they finished skipping and were lying down on the grass in a comfortable silence, both in their own deep thoughts. She thought about how this day was so much better than that day. This day was so much more cheerful.
As Chris and Charlotte made more Harry Potter references, they were completely oblivious to the man watching them from afar. He had gone unnoticed to both of the teenagers. The man hiding had his mouth curled up in a smirk, his eyes glinting happily and his fave slightly crumpled from concentration. He may have looked like the bad guy, but in his mind, he was saving his sister from the same fate as his. Being forced to live with the fairies. He believed that she should know that he didn't murder his mother for some psychotic reason, it was to keep his sister away from the evil fairies. They wanted all descendants of Rose Wilson to live with them and to conquer the world and rid it of humans. Sort of like that Voldemort in the book that Charlotte always goes on about .
Troy had chosen this day to explain to his sister about his decisions, because this was the day he had killed their mother. After seconds of hesitation, he jumped out of the bushes, and before Charlotte could scream for help, he quickly shushed her and tried to explain. From the fairies, to their mother, and he also told her where he was for the past year. It would have all been perfect, but...She didn't believe him.
