"Papa, why can't I be seen with you?" a young boy asked, feeding the ducks by the lake.

"There are many people in this world who want me dead, August. Your mother and I believe it is safer for them not to know about you," the father answered, running his hand through the boy's hair.

"But you're nice to me, Papa. Why do they want you dead?" August added.

"Auggie, that's a loaded question," the man laughed as more ducks gathered for food.

"When you're older, I will explain it better, but just promise me you'll always wear this," he said, lifting the golden pendant around the boy's neck.

August, distracted by the animals, began to mimic the birds, his questions momentarily forgotten.
