The return from the event to the university was excruciating. I felt humiliated. It was like everyone knew what happened and had heard him rejecting me.
My friends tried to talk about how cute it was that Jungwon and I were seen together during the party, but I got so panicked that I shut silent.
Of course, as soon as I showed up at school, Sunoo and Sooha jumped at my throat,
"You look awful! What happened at this fancy party?!"
"Did you mess up your speech??"
I wish that's what had happened. It would have been less painful.
"No. It went well," I lied.
They looked at each other, unconvinced.
"Is it Jung-"
"Let's not-!" I choke. "Ahem, let's not talk about him."
They exchange another look, finally understanding. I act as if nothing happened, and they politely change the subject.
The day goes pretty grim.
Until the problem himself shows up,
"Hi there Engene! Did you recover well from the flight back? You look terrible."
I'm so baffled that I just stare at him, eyes wide. He is acting perfectly normal, exactly as if nothing happened. Not acting less cheerful or more awkward than usual, just exactly like he used to.
It's so anticlimactic compared to my mood that I can't help but feel better. It's like everything I felt until now was just a dream. As if I simply imagined this fateful evening.
I can't help but laugh.
"I'm alright! I followed your precious advices and simply slept the whole way."
He smirks and starts joking around again. He leaves just before class time, and once again, Sooha and Sunoo start off,
"What just happened?? I thought you had a fight with him? Weren't you in a bad mood because of him?"
"I was...but maybe I simply misunderstood."
"Being in such a bad state because of a misunderstanding..."
My two friends seem unconvinced, but they don't insist. Even if I know that they won't give up without investigating.
I'm never telling them what happened!
After school is music club. I know I'm gonna face Jungwon, but I'm not apprehending it anymore. I'm even impatient!
We end up sitting next to each other, and we start chatting. My foul mood is gone.
Until Jungwon asks,
"Hey, Engene. Would you come to my place tonight?"
