Headcanon: Madeline has worked at a coffee shop before!
---------
It was no surprise to Joshua that Madeline, his... friend of sorts, used to work at a café a little bit after the break up. But that place didn't exist anymore, only memories of when he once went there to take shelter from a storm. It wasn't a pleasant memory for the two.
His friend, Isaac, would constantly pester Madeline about her barista skills but she would always give him the same lame excuse. 'It's an old skill, I don't have it anymore.' She would say but Joshua knew the truth, and would he ever mention it to her? Most likely but even he's not that cruel, to expose her in front of Leah and Isaac.
Madeline was sitting on the couch while typing away at her computer, her ear buds in. Joshua was petting their cat Sunny, occasionally glancing over at Madeline. From the computer screen, she was looking for nearby shops, most noticeable was a coffee shop. Perhaps she was going to take photos of the place for her blog or just for aesthetic purposes? The question lingered in Joshua's head but he didn't say anything to her, after all it was her business and not his.
Her hair was tied together with a hair tie, a small bow encasing the hair tie and yet, her bangs covered her eye. Joshua had a feeling that she wouldn't be too pleased if he asked permission to move her bangs. After all, they were no more and it was quite awkward to live with your ex-girlfriend. The purr of Sunny had ceased, the pleasure of receiving attention had bored the furry creature. The small cat hopped off of Joshua's lap and landed on the floor with a silent thud. The sound was enough to break Madeline from her daze, which caused her to pluck a earbud from her ear.
"What's going on? Did someone call me?" Madeline asked Joshua, turning to face his devilish self. The body he wish would die. He shook his head, and Madeline hummed a quiet response.
"I did mean to ask you something, Madeline." Joshua started, her attention was piqued and he continued, "At the coffee shop when you helped me, did you mean what you said back then?"
She was quiet, the memory of her rescuing Joshua from a storm, drenched in rain water and sneezing as hard a fired gun. Madeline remembered that day all too well.
She nodded once more and said, "Yeah, I did mean it. We may not be together anymore but I can't bare to see you sick or hurt. You're still the same Josh I had met, the same edgy and distant boy who hated the rain. I don't hate you, but I can't forgive you for what you had done." Joshua knew what she was referring to. The day of the break-up. It was a painful memory to swallow, the tears that were shed and the words that tore through hearts.
He sighed. "I deserved that."
She gave him a small smile and replied, "You do. Do you want to see what me and my mutual are working on?" She slid the computer over for Joshua to see, the brown light draping over his ghoulish face and dirty hair. The coffee shop was in perfect view, the style resembled a cozy home where anyone was welcomed. "I was going to go over here and take pictures for my blog, but I want you to help. Do you know any good plants that fit with a café style?"
Joshua had to take a moment to process what Madeline was saying, words that didn't string together to make some sort of sense. He truly did not know how to answer her. But he didn't want to let her down.
"How about," He started speak, "We both figure that out, together as friends." It was an offer that made Madeline smile even wider. She nodded her head quickly, allowing Joshua to release some built up tension that he didn't know that he kept.
Madeline closed her computer and said, "Sounds like a plan, Josh. And maybe, just maybe I'll get back into working at a café. I miss those moments where a fresh pot of coffee has just been brewed and the scent fills the rooms, and it gives everyone peace."
Joshua stood up from the couch, a sound of cracking leg bones followed by quickly. He set a hand on his hip as he looked over at Madeline.
"Good, and I'll tell no one about the old café."
"Thanks Joshua."
"Anytime Madeline."
