"Let go of me!" he roars at the cop, his voice echoing with a desperate ferocity as he thrashed against the restraining hands. Cuffed and held by three officers, his fury burns brighter than fear. Brave or simply unhinged?
"Get in!" The officer shoves him into the squad car with a final, forceful push. He casts an evil glare at me before the door slams shut, making my heart pound.
"My god, he's scary," I let out, my hand on my heart.
"Don't worry, Miss Kirby. He won't disturb you again. We'll take care of him from here!"
"You should take him to a hospital or something. He seems mentally unstable to me," I suggested, my voice trembling slightly.
"I AM NOT SICK!" he bellows from inside the car.
My eyes widen.
"Don't be scared, ma'am. He won't trouble you again. Please try to get some rest."
I nodded, "Thank you, officer."
As the cop walks away, I retreat inside, the familiar comfort of home suddenly feeling foreign and unsafe. That night, sleep eluded me. When morning finally came, I dragged myself to the shower, got dressed, and headed to school, the clear blue sky and warm sunlight doing little to lift the shadow over my heart.
At school, the first face I saw was Nate's. My cheeks flush. "Hi, Nate."
"Hey, Miss Kirby. How are you doing?" His smile dims, concern etching lines of worry across his features as he tenderly lifts my chin, his gaze probing for the truth beneath the facade. "You okay? You look tired."
See, how well he sees through me.
"Yeah, last night wasn't the best."
"Why?"
"Uh, I've been busy. What about you? Don't you have a class?"
"Yeah, but I'm not attending today. Exams are close. I need to make preparations."
"Yeah, I checked last week's test papers. The students are doing well this year."
"In English, Miss Kirby. There are more subjects they need to excel in to pass the year."
I chuckle. "Don't worry. I believe in them."
"Nate?" Our conversation is interrupted by Miss Kavanagh, his girlfriend. She wraps her arm around his possessively and says, "Hi, Liza. How have you been?"
"I'm doing great, thanks."
"Good to know," she smiled, "Nate, babe? Can we eat out tonight?"
"Sure. Would you like to join us, Liza?" he asked, his smile kind but unaware of the silent struggle within me.
"Oh, I wish, but I'm busy. Maybe next time?"
I would rather die of hunger than watch them feed each other.
Nate nodded, "Next time then."
The day drags on relentlessly, a blur of teaching, lunch, and endless classes that seem to stretch into eternity. Exhaustion grips me like a vise. I couldn't sleep last night and the blame rests squarely on the shoulders of that psycho. His haunting presence refusing to release its grip on my thoughts. His fierce green eyes flash relentlessly in my mind, a constant reminder of last night's terror.
