The town I learned was called Velaris. Also referred to as The City of Starlight.
And it was brilliant.
People bustled around the shops carefree, and I couldn't help but stare. They weren't starving. And they were happy. Even the children laughed and played problem free.
I let Feyre do most of the talking as we walked around, too busy taking everything in.
Something bumped against my leg, and I looked down to see big brown eyes staring up at me, little wings fluttering behind him.
"hello" the child greeted, and I tilted my head, crouching down to his level.
"hello" I echoed, eyes tracing his youthful face, and the tiny wings. So small.
"are you from winter?" his voice asked and I smiled a little, shaking my head, his hand reaching up to hold a piece of my white hair. "summer?"
"I'm from the human lands" I told him gently, unsure if he knew what that meant but his face lit up with a squeal that made me look at Feyre quickly. She grinned, shrugging.
"you're human?!" he gaped at me and I nodded "that's so cool!" I couldn't help but chuckle at his excitement, eyes searching for his parents.
"I think you're cool too. I like your wings"
The child gave me a toothy grin in return, beginning to rant to me about how one day he's going to be able to fly like the rest of the warriors.
"-there you are!" a female rested her hand on her hip as she rounded the corner, spying the small boy talking to me "Malachai" she scolded the boy who flushed red at his mothers voice.
"sorry mum" he mumbled, returning to her side and I rose.
"I'm so sorry my lady" she apologised to me, and I fought the surprise off my face at the title.
"don't be, he's a very kind young male" the boy beamed from his mother's side and even she let out a smile, "I look forward to seeing you fly"
We both waved after the family as they walked away.
"you okay?" Feyre asked and I nodded, tearing my eyes away from where they had gone.
"The people are so happy here."
"it's strange, isn't it?" she agreed quietly "such a different world to what we grew up in"
I nodded in agreement, noting the pretty blonde fae approaching us, hand reaching for a weapon that wasn't there.
"Easy" she held her hands up jokingly, easy smile gracing her face despite my tense figure "I'm not here for a fight"
"Alex, this is Morrigan, our third in command" she introduced "Mor, this is Alex."
Recognition crossed Mor's face at my name.
"you're the one who taught her to hunt right?"
I nodded and she grinned.
"Why don't we find somewhere to sit down?" Feyre suggested, and we did just that. Finding a coffee shop in the sunshine and I basked in the sun, shutting my eyes as I tilted my head back.
"you got any fae in you Alex?" my eyebrows furrowed at the odd question, peering over at Mor who had paused in her story.
"no. why?"
"you're very pretty, inhumanly so" my cheeks darkened as she spoke, her brown eyes trailing over my face.
"Thank you?"
"no need to thank me honey, its just facts"
My lips quirked up as I examined her, eyes narrowing as they raked across her.
"I appreciate it, but I don't swing that way"
The blonde laughed as Feyre's eyes widened.
"You could tell just by looking at me?" Mor asked, incredulous and I smirked slightly.
"I spent a lot of time around men. Its easy to notice when a female is paying me a little too much attention"
She chuckled, sipping her iced drink.
"I think I'm going to like you Alex"
"not too much hopefully"
The three of us roamed around a while longer and I found myself splitting from them to admire the river.
It twinkled in the low light of the sun, and I found myself lost in it. Maybe I could come and swim here soon? My fingers itched to reach over the stone wall and trail through the water.
The city was so beautiful. So beautiful. And it hadn't hit me that I would be living here now. A new home. With...family.
