Preface:
Everyone has life changing moments that change everything they have ever known. Some will have few, others will have so many it can feel as though life is throwing everything it has at you to see if it can break you down, eat you up and spit you out. These moments can be good, bad or sometimes, though rare, both good and bad.
These are my life changing moments. Now, I could just go ahead and tell you only about the moments themselves, but 1) you wouldn’t get the whole story and 2) what would be the fun in that?
I am going to start way back at the beginning 8 seemingly long years ago. . .
Chapter 1:
“Happy birthday to us! We live in a zoo! We look like monkeys! And we smell like one too!” My sister Caryn and I were singing as we jumped down the stairs. It was our birthday today and couldn’t be happier to be turning 14. School got out last week, today we were having a little party then a sleep over and tomorrow we had to leave to go help Mom and Dad remodel some duplexes they bought. The remodeling wasn’t really exciting but going to spend the summer at Grandma’s after was.
We jumped over the bottom two steps together holding hands and continued our completely off key singing into the kitchen where Mom was cooking up bacon, eggs and baked oatmeal with bananas, raisins and apples; yum, yum.
“Happy birthday!” Our parents and brother Daryn yelled as we skipped into the room.
“Thank you.” We said smiling and jumping up onto the stools at the counter.
Mom finished dishing up two plates for us and placed them in front of us. “So, how does it feel to be 14?” She asked coming around to take her seat with her plate full of food.
Caryn said “Awesome”, while I said “Fantastic”. We wasted no more time talking and dug into our food. Baked oatmeal is the best breakfast food ever. Mom mixes everything up in a big bowl then puts it on a couple cookie sheets and bakes it for a half hour and we eat it in a bowl with milk and eat it like cereal. Mom always makes a big batch of it every week and Caryn, Daryn and I will munch on it for a few days then have to wait a few more until she makes some more.
“What are you girls up to today?” My dad asked us once he was finished eating.
“Daryn said he would take Taryn and me to the mall before we have to get ready for the party; right Daryn?” Caryn told him since she was almost done. I actually liked to taste my food, not inhale it like the rest of the family seems to do.
“Right” Daryn got up to rinse off his dish in the sink then headed towards the hall, presumably to go to his room. “Be ready in 20 or I’m leaving without you, even if it is your birthday.” He said disappearing behind the swinging door.
“Alright, Taryn, you get the credit card from Dad and hurry up!” She demanded before rushing out of the room. A second later her stomping up the stairs could be heard then her yelling, “Shot gun!” midway up.
Quickly finishing the last of the food on my plate I rinsed off both our dishes. Turning around Dad already had card in hand holding it out for me.
“Don’t go let Caryn go crazy with it, there is only a $5,000 limit on here.” He joked. I grabbed for the card only for him to pull it out of my reach at the last second and pull me into a tight hug. “Happy birthday sweetie, have fun shopping and buy whatever you want, go a little crazy. I want to see at least half of everything be for you.” He said before releasing me and handing me the card.
