When Wen Ning was almost pushed up against the wall and the police entered the house, Tao knew they were done for. Where could he be hiding Wei Wuxian? He didn't even have time to think when the kitchen door opened. Two policemen looked at him, then turned to Wei Wuxian, and their eyes widened.
Even though Wei Wuxian was hiding under the blanket, part of his flipper was visible. The two policemen didn't know how to react, it was the first time they'd come across such a case.
-Goodness...
One of them approached and knelt down to Wei Wuxian's level, as if he were a little boy.
-Hey, do you understand me?
-Of course, who do you think I am?
-No, it's just that it's strange to be in front of someone like you.
The other policeman had called the whole team, and so the kitchen was filled in a few seconds. At the back, Wen Ning panicked. The policeman in front of Wei Wuxian pulled back the blanket in a fit of curiosity, revealing the red fin and other special parts of Wei Wuxian's body.
Wei Wuxian hid his body as best he could and began to panic in earnest. The policeman in front of him stood up and turned to another, who appeared to be the leader.
-What do we do now? We've found the missing man, but he's... like this.
-Of course. We'll take him back to the station.
However, before he could get any closer, smoke began to billow into the kitchen. Wen Ning rushed towards Wei Wuxian, grabbed him and escaped through the window, followed by Tao. Once in his car, Wen Ning started up and quickly shifted up a gear.
-Wen Ning!' Wei Wuxian shouted indignantly. Why did you do that?! You're going to be in trouble again!
-Those police bums would never have let you go. I've already drowned a car for you, getting the police on my back is nothing in comparison.
-...
In the distance, the police car caught up with them. Wen Ning grumbled and accelerated.
-Right, then. I'll lose them, put Tao in his place and then take you to get your weapons so you can leave as quickly as possible.
-What?' complained Tao.
-Tao, you've done enough. Thanks for your help, I'll give you a raise for that.
-I don't need the money! I just...
-No, please. I don't want to drag you into this.
Wei Wuxian was flabbergasted. It was amazing how confident and authoritative Wen Ning had become! He still remembered the shy boy who preferred to keep to himself.
Wen Ning eventually lost the police and dropped Tao off at his house, as planned. Then he set off for the laboratory. However, seeing that there were patrols here and there in the city, he abandoned his vehicle in a forest and circled the city, Wei Wuxian on his back. Eventually, the two arrived.
Wen Ning took Wei Wuxian to a quasi-secret compartment in the laboratory. He switched on the light and looked around for weapons.
-I've got some basic weapons like harpoons, but I don't think that's what you're looking for. If you want, I've got some sort of aquatic laser pistols...
Wei Wuxian was about to reply when he felt a pair of arms grab him.
-What the...? Let go of me!
Wen Ning turned round and saw the same police patrol that had knocked on his door. One of them was holding Wei Wuxian tightly. The chief approached.
-At first, I thought you'd kidnapped him to carry out some bizarre experiments that led to his anatomical change... But from what I can see, you're on the same side. Wanting to help him to the point of becoming an outlaw, I admit I'm surprised.
-How did you find us?
-Mr Wen, that's my job! Just because you lost us doesn't mean you've won.
-What do you intend to do about it?
-Hm? What about him?
He turned to Wei Wuxian. He walked over to him and took hold of his chin.
-I don't know,' he said. When a human suddenly turns into a mermaid, what do you want me to do? We're going to have to do some research.
Wei Wuxian grumbled.
-Say you want to torture me or sell me.
-What makes you think I'm going to do that? I'm the law.
Wei Wuxian laughed.
-You think I don't know? When the fishermen found the newt, they handed it over to you so that 'justice' would take good care of it. And in the end, you sold it.
The policeman arched an eyebrow and laughed back.
-Did he tell you?
-...
-You seem very close to these creatures, to the point of becoming one of them.
Seeing that Wei Wuxian was just glowering at him, the policeman sighed.
-Anyway. At least you know what to expect. Take him away. As for Wen Ning, shoot him in both legs and leave him here.
Wen Ning was about to protest when a policeman shot him in the legs. He fell to the ground screaming, and blood began to pour out. Wei Wuxian wanted to rush towards him, but the policemen grabbed him. But Wei Wuxian hit them and ran towards his friend. Before the policemen caught him, he had time to whisper in Wen Ning's ear.
-Lan Wangji. You've got his number.
Then the policemen grabbed him and took him away. Wen Ning was stunned. When he was alone, he picked up his phone and looked for Lan Wangji in his contacts. Luckily for him, he'd kept his number. He could only hope that Lan Wangji had kept his phone.
-Wen Ning. If you're calling me, I assume something's happened.
-L...Lan Wangji! It was the police, they took him away! Just like Jin Ling! I'm hurt, I can't do anything...
He heard Lan Wangji sigh.
-Where are you now?
-In the lab.
-So don't move, I'm coming.
