Chapter Two
Everybody was gasping in the truck. My heart thumped.
"What about Janice and Mason? What if they go back and die?" I screamed.
"You have a phone for a reason, Ellie," Logan said calmly, turning the truck through the trees and into the forest. "Call them."
My fingers shook as I pulled out my blackberry and dialed Janice's number.
"Janice?"
"Ellie, what's up? I can barely hear you, where are you? The lights in the shopping centre have just gone off. There's us and a family of seven."
I shook my head. "You wouldn't believe what just almost ate us. Dead people. The whole house was just destroyed by dead people! You know how that makes me feel? Millie and Kasey were almost killed. Right now Logan is taking us into the woods. I know an old woman who has a shack back there. Meet us there, okay?"
"Well," Janice said. "I think we'll try! I mean, have you seen the people here? They're all shaking. Look, look, I gotta go. I think the cops or somebody is here to help. Look, groaning. That means somebody is hurt, right? Um, uh-"
The signal went dead. I knew that Millie was more nervous than any of us.
"I don't even want to stay here," Millie said finally, when the truck arrived at the shack. "This place looks like somebody died in it."
"Somebody did."
Logan ran up to the old woman, and stabbed her in the head. I gasped in shock, only to be more alarmed at the fact that she was one of them. Kasey threw up by a bush two metres away, and then couldn't even look at Logan.
"Poor soul," Millie wept. "Look, this is a fine reason to why this place is not safe! Let's just get out of the town okay! My cousin who lives in Nemphis is in the army. Lets go to him."
"Guys! In the shack!"
Kasey pushed us into the shack. I was happy that she did. Five walkers jumped out of the forest. Logan locked the door, and Millie sat down on a regal sofa in the living room. I spotted a radio device and a TV.
"Golly, the TV works!" Millie shouted. "Look, the news is on."
We all huddled round the TV, and listened to the radio mans voice.
"'This is radio 2.730. We're having some technical difficulties in the studios right now so we're going off air. Radio 2.730 wishes everybody good luck in the worlds first zombie apocolypse." KKSSHSHSH.
"Zombie apocolypse? That's what this is?! Come on, now I feel like the Walking Dead Game! This can't be the end. What about all the kids?!"
"Like that one?"
Logan pointed at the back door, where a bunch of people and three children were stood. I ran the door and let them in.
"Are you hurt?!"
"I don't even know," a man said. "My name's Tom and this is my family. We moved from Macon a couple of hours ago, and now I wish we'd had stayed. There's no local supplies anywhere, just nougat candy bars and energy drinks."
"Well we're gonna need those while we still have them," Logan interrupted, folding his arms and leaning against a wooden pillar. "Two of our friends didn't make it from the local store. If supplies were there, there's no way a group of novices like us will be able to get them. You guys can stay for now."
Tom smiled. "Thank-you, son. This is my family. My wife, Bella, and our two kids, Mollie and Nate. Then there's Nate's girlfriend Tessa with their kid Lottie. I'm grateful you're letting us stay with ya'll. The baby keeps crying. The milk ran out."
Logan turned away. "Get the milk from the fridge. This old lady that attacked us when we were trying to get into here. I'm not even sure if she had fully turned. Consider yourselves lucky."
He walked up the wooden stairs to the upstairs bedroom where he tried to get the computers working. I escorted the survivors into the living room, where Millie greeted the children with open arms and switched over to a tape recorded by the woman for her grandchildren. Ha, Teletubbies, my old favourite TV show when I was a kid. I didn't even know that was still around. Bella looked over at me and smiled.
"You're ever so kind letting us stay here," she said. She looked at her son Nate. "Nate's girlfriend is expecting a baby any day now. None of us know when, thats why she needs to be safe. We have enough supplies with us in the truck out back. I'm pretty sure that Nate just went outside to get it. Oh, and so did Tom."
I could feel the blood running through my body. I heard the most terrifying and alarming scream in my life. It was Nate and Tom. I ran out of the room to see three walkers on top of them. Two on Nate and a fat one on Tom. I panicked. Who was I going to save?!
My head chose for me. I ran towards Nate, shooting all of the walkers on him with Logan's gun I had found in his truck. I saved Nate. Then there was Tom. I ran to him, but it was too late. His body was drained, his guts and everything everywhere. You wouldn't have believed how fast they turn. I knew what I had to do. I had to shoot him.
