Chapter Three.

The day went past as cold as the artic. Bella never spoke to me through the long and hard month we spent in the shack. Nate became good friends with me. I suppose he was just grateful for me saving his ass. But I couldn't let a dad die. Yeah, I know Tom was a dad too. But Nate has a kid on the way! I couldn't leave Tessa with all the greif of being a single parent. Not now, anyways.

Logan hardly showed his face around the shack. Ever since he got the computers running, he's been updating with his friends in Memphis. Mollie was too busy trying to contact her boyfriend who was doing a photoshoot in Dallas. I tried my hardest to focus on living.

"I think some of us should try to head into town to get more food," I suggested. "I just looked in the fridge and saw nothing. We're all out. The basement is locked. I'd find it helpful is somebody tried to open the door while I'm gone. Does anybody want to come with me?"

Nate nodded. "You saved my ass. I am probably going to need to save yours. I think Logan might want to come too."

"Yeah," Logan agreed, walking down the stairs. "I have the gun license."

"Okay then. Millie, will you, Mollie and Kasey try and budge open the basement door? If there's any food down there, we'll be okay. I'll see you guys later on. Do not open the door, under any circumstances! Especially not for any random stranger."

                                                                          **

"How much farther till the town?" Nate asked, grabbing a gun off Logan.

"Five minutes. Look, here's the shopping centre that Janice and Mason were. If we could get in there and get the supplies that they found, we should be okay."

Logan nodded. "That's not a bad idea. But just so we're clear, I'm not letting some ass like Nate get us killed. He managed to get two bloody walkers on him. And who saved his fricking ass? A girl."

He walked on ahead, and I looked at Nate. "Sorry about him. He's been all weird and just weird ever since he killed that old woman."

"Nah, I hear you people. You guys must have suffered, youngens. You've probably thought that this would never happen, you've lived life."

"No, we found out about this the day after we arrived from University. We'd all just finished our first term. Look, we gotta go. Logan's already inside."

Logan ran up the broken escelator and surveyed the area. "Come on. I'm going to that hardware store for more weapons. Nate your on watch. Don't get fucking killed. Ellie, go to the grocery store."

"Ok."

I walked silently along the blood stained corridor to the store. Nate didn't even offer me a gun. I was left empty handed, with nothing but a blunt knife I had snagged from the counters back at the shack. It was so quiet. There was apsaloutley nothing around us. This store was empty. I quickly scanned all of the isles. and turned a corner. I froze. There, around a stain of blood and guts, was a zombie with a face so familiar. My hope had died. It was Mason.
