A minority of the world's population carries a genetic modification. They are called deviants and some of them develop, by the age of seven, an ability. In the 90s, a war broke out in the United States of America between humans and deviants.

The deviants were led by a terrorist group known as the Five and its leader, Matthew Moore. A large community of deviants, the Aristons, hidden in plain sight, fought alongside the Five, but decided to surrender to the government.

The then president used a secret weapon, a deviant they controlled known as the Angel of Death, to destroy the Ariston community and blame the Five for it.

Following the destruction of the community, two of the Five died, and their group weakened. The war ended, and an institute was created to teach deviants with abilities to be perfect members of society. One of the deviants taught there is Emily Roberts, considered the world's most powerful deviant.

Several years later, the Five are dead. Their heirs, Rachel Moore and Alex Williams, team up with Megan Grant (the Angel of Death) and form a movement for the liberation of deviants. Later, Diego Álvarez, a member of the extinct Ariston community, joins.

The institute convinces students from around the world to join, Ánh Nguyễn and Aminu Ikubor start studying there. They become friends with Abigail Parker, Emily's best friend. Ánh starts reading more and more about the terrorist movement and fakes her own death in 2025 to join them.

In 2028, the annual celebration of the Day of Peace takes place. The institute presents its newest invention, a bracelet that can prevent the activation of the deviants' ability. The terrorist group streams a video calling out to the government and the institute for their corruption, but a sniper shoots against the crowd, killing the President of the United States of America.

The assassination was planned by the Council, which the new president, anti-deviant, the president of the institute, Emily's father and Megan's mother are part of. They were the ones responsible for the destruction of the Ariston community.

The terrorist movement discovers that deviants are being taken and experimented on. They realize that Megan's mother is most likely behind it and try to find her.

The Council organizes a massacre at the institute, planning on killing Emily in the process. Rachel, Megan, Alex and Ánh save everyone and Abigail finds out Ánh is alive.

Abigail and Emily grow suspicious of Emily's parents and follow her brother, only to find out that he is somehow connected to the massacre at the institute. Unable to trust anyone else, Abigail and Emily decide to fake their abduction and enter the movement.

Having had enough with the movement, the Council devises a plan to catch them, and for that, they need Aminu.

The first part ended with the revelation that Megan has three abilities. Something that no one else in the world has. When they first met, Rachel decided to keep that a secret from everyone, including the rest of the movement.
