You clutched your phone, a grin splitting your face. The deal was signed, sealed, and delivered. Seven glorious months of freedom stretched before you. As you scrolled through your contacts, a familiar name popped up - Alyah. You hadn't spoken to Renee's best friend in ages, but you knew she was always on the road with Renee's crew.
A beat later, your phone buzzed with a call. "Hey Alyah! How's tour life?"
"Crazy busy as usual," Alyah replied, "but listen, we're gonna be in your neck of the woods next week! We were wondering..." her voice trailed off.
You knew exactly where this was going. You and Renee had been friends forever, and it wasn't exactly a secret that you both harboured deeper feelings. The past few months on opposite sides of the world had been torture.
"Wondering if you could, you know, crash our little party for a bit?" Alyah finished with a laugh.
"Wouldn't miss it for the world," you said, your heart hammering with excitement.
The backstage area was a whirlwind of activity the day of the show. You snuck past the security with Alyah's help, a goofy grin plastered on your face.
"Alright, here's the plan," Alyah whispered, leading you towards a luxurious tour bus. "Everyone's freaking out because Renee's been...well, out of it lately. We all know it has something to do with you being gone."
You helped Alyah stash your bag, butterflies erupting in your stomach. This was it.
The concert was electric. Halfway through a song, you couldn't help but steal a glance at Renee. She owned the stage, her voice soaring through the venue. But beneath the confident exterior, you saw a flicker of something else - a longing you recognised all too well.
After the show, you snuck onto the bus, your heart pounding a frantic rhythm. You settled onto a plush couch, waiting for the door to open.
Moments later, the door creaked open, and Renee stumbled in, exhaustion etched on her face. Her eyes landed on you, and then everything seemed to slow down. Tears welled up in her eyes, spilling over like a broken dam. Before you could react, she crumpled to the floor.
In a blink, you were by her side, scooping her into a tight hug. "Hey, I'm here," you murmured, your voice thick with emotion. "I've got you now."
The bus rumbled to life, carrying you both towards a future filled with laughter, music, and the promise of something new. As everyone settled in for the night, Renee curled up beside you, her head resting peacefully on your chest. In the quiet of the bus, you heard a soft sigh escape her lips. A content smile spread across your face.
A sliver of sunlight peeked through the bus window, rousing Renee from her sleep. She blinked a few times, the world slowly coming into focus. Curled up next to her was Y/n, fast asleep and radiating a peaceful warmth. A smile bloomed on Renee's face, wider than it had been in weeks.
Carefully, Renee shifted a bit, watching Y/n's face for any sign of waking. Y/n, completely out of it, simply mumbled something incoherent and tightened her grip around Renee. Laughter bubbled up in Renee's chest, a sound so foreign it felt strange. She hadn't realized how much she'd missed that sound, both from herself and from Y/n.
The bus door creaked open and Alyah peeked in. "Morning lovebirds!" she chirped, then seeing the sight before her, she winked and gave a silent thumbs up. Renee shushed her playfully, a blush creeping up her cheeks. Alyah just grinned and retreated, leaving the two of them in comfortable silence.
Y/n stirred slightly, her leg lifting and draping itself over the armrest in a way that looked both awkward and strangely comfortable. Renee watched a small furrow in her brow. But then, seeing the soft puff of Y/n's breath and the gentle rise and fall of her chest, Renee decided comfort was the only thing that mattered.
The morning sun continued its journey across the sky, bathing the bus in a warm glow. Renee watched Y/n sleep, a newfound sense of peace settling over her. The future stretched out before them, filled with uncertainty, but for now, in this quiet moment, everything felt perfect.
The rhythmic rumble of the bus lulled Y/n awake. Sunlight streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow over the room. Glancing down, she saw Renee curled up beside her on the couch, a soft blanket wrapped around them both. A smile tugged at Y/n's lips before the insistent vibration of her phone pulled her attention away.
"Hi Mom," Y/n answered, her voice still thick with sleep. The conversation flowed easily, filled with updates and the usual parental inquiries. Y/n could practically hear the question forming on her mom's lips.
"Yes, Mom, I'm safe," Y/n said with a laugh, anticipating her next words. "And yes, I know. Don't worry, I'll tell her when I can."
Y/n glanced down at Renee, who was still peacefully sleeping. "She's right next to me, but we're on the couch, everything is okay," Y/n reassured her mom, the smile returning to her voice.
After hanging up, Alyah emerged from the kitchen area, a steaming cup of tea in hand. "Good morning, sleepyhead," Alyah greeted, handing Y/n the tea. "So, when are you going to tell her you love her?"
Y/n took a sip of tea, her gaze lingering on Renee. "Soon," she replied, a determined glint in her eyes.
The morning continued with a low hum of activity. Y/n settled in to answer some work emails, her voice kept to a whisper to avoid disturbing Renee. Frustration bubbled up as the questions dragged on, a stark contrast to the carefree break she envisioned.
Just as she was about to excuse herself, a restless movement from Renee caught her attention. Renee tossed and turned, brow furrowed, whimpering softly in her sleep. Y/n didn't hesitate, placing a comforting hand on Renee's shoulder and speaking in a soothing tone.
Renee jolted awake, tears welling in her eyes. Without a word, she buried her face in Y/n's shoulder, her body trembling slightly. Y/n held her close, whispering reassurances until Renee's sobs subsided into quiet sniffles.
Renee eventually drifted back to sleep, her head resting on Y/n's shoulder, her breath warm against Y/n's neck. Y/n watched the sunlight dance across Renee's face, a feeling of calm washing over her. The work emails could wait. For now, all that mattered was the peaceful rhythm of Renee's sleep and the silent promise hanging in the air. This stolen moment, a love waiting to bloom was perfect in its way.
