|||THIRD POV|||
It's been six weeks since you called it off with your girlfriend. The one person who decided you were enough and worth sticking with.
"I miss her dad," you gulped, hugging yourself.
"But I can't take back what I said," you sighed, wiping the tears with your soaked sleeve.
"I was an idiot... she deserves better than me." You had never seen your own value because your mother had gotten a divk thrill telling you how useless you are.
"I just need you to tell me to stop being an idiot," your voice cracked as you sunk to your knees at the foot of your father's grave.
It had been about three weeks since your father passed away. You lost the one person who had loved and stayed with you since day one.
Sat at his grave once more, you couldn't even look at the headstone.
"You left me." The whisper was weak and shaky.
"Dad, you... you promised to always be here for me." You didn't even wipe the tears from your eyes.
"I just want..." You gulped, sighing, unable to comprehend the hurt in your chest. "... you here." You sighed as the hopelessness set in your bones.
"I need her," you worked up the courage to face the gravestone. "I just want to get her back," you spared a glance at his headstone and gasped at the sight of the bird sitting on his headstone.
It was a Robin, his all-time favourite bird. Your father loved bird watching, and although you never really understood the hype, you'd always accompany him loving how happy he was to talk about birds.
The sight of the robin made helped you remember tpur father's smile and his contagious roaring laugh. A teary laugh slipped from your lips.
"You and your timing old man," you smiled for the first time in weeks. "Never missing a chance to give advice," You watched the bird jump down and walk over to your hand places on the grass.
You held your breath as the robin stood on your finger and stayed there as you slowly lifted your hand. Your heart was racing as the robin watched you.
Once close enough, the robon leaned his head against your making your breath hitch, and when you smiled widely, the bird looked at you a second longer before flying away.
The sudden disappearance of the bird did remind you of your father's sudden death, but it also reminded you that beautiful and worthwhile things in life seemed just as fleeting, and you wanted to hold onto those things.
Staring with Jenna.
Back at home, you had taken a shower and dressed in casual attire just to seem more okay than you felt.
You had been staring at your phone for nearly an hour. You had run out out excuses as to why you shouldn't call.
You reached for your phone, and the sound startled you, making you grumble as you let your hand drop from your chest.
You answered the phone, seeing it was your best friend.
"Hi Ems." You smiled to yourself, always happy to hear from her.
"Hey girl, so I might have accidentally told someone about your..." Emma sounded nervous, which made you raise a brow.
"About what?" You rubbed your eyes annoyed at they seemed to always sting.
"Umm, I would have loved to tell you this in person, but I am like halfway across the world--" You knew she was now stalling.
"Emma, just tell me." You sighed, dragging your hand across your face, not in the mood for more bad news.
"I may have told Jenna about your dad." She had said it so quick you nearly missed it, but you finally got it and gasped.
"What!?" The word came out much louder than intended.
"In my defence!" She quickly countered. "I didn't know she didn't know!" You could hear her exacerbated groan.
"Why would I tell her!?" You weren't sure why you were so panicked about Jenna knowing. Maybe because you knew it meant you had to face her, she too loved your father. Everyone did.
"Because your dumbass lied to me about still being friends with her!" Emma scolded, and you but your tongue, knowing you were wrong for lying, but you didn't want her to decide between you and Jenna because you knew she would choose you.
"I didn't want to..." You sighed suddenly, feeling a familiar exhaustion seeping into your bonrs.
"It doesn't matter," Emma assured hearing the exhaustion in your tone. "I just wanted to give you a heads-up because Jenna sounded really worried when I told her."
"A heads up for what?" The faintest hint of dread filled your chest.
Before she could answer, the doorbell was being rang insistently.
You went to see who it was and flinging the door open you saw here there, you let out a gasp as your hand dropped to your side.
"Hi," she nearly whispered.
"Wha‐-" Your words caught in the lump of your throat as you felt your eyes water.
You clutched your fists as a sob fell past your lips. You didn't hear Emma calling out to you from the other side of the phone.
You had forgotten about your phone until Jenna gently took it from you. "I got it, Ems," Jenna assured as she stepped into your old childhood home and closed the door behind her.
"I'm sorry!" You sobbed sinking to your knees, overwhelmed by everything you felt.
"Don't apologise," Jenna knelt down, sitting with her back against the wall, slowly guiding you between her legs giving you time to pull away but you fell into her arms gripping her torso like your life depended on it.
"I love you— I swear!" You managed between your sobs. Jenna sat, holding you tight, rubbing circles on your back, knowing it was the fastest way to calm you down.
"I love you too," her words were sincere and calming.
After a while, you had calmed down coaxed into this relaxed state by gentle whispers from the brown eyed woman.
"You're gonna be okay," Jenna offered gently.
You didn't have the strength to pull out of her hold, deciding to find comfort in it instead.
"Why did you come back?" You nearly whispered.
"I heard about upur dad... I'm sorry I wasn't here." She apologised like it wasn't you that had pushed her away in fear of being a burden when you realised your father wouldn't make it.
"It's not--"
"Still, I should have known you were lashing out," Jenna knew you nearly as well as your father did, and you loved that.
"Know that I'm not going anywhere. If you still want me, I will be here for you right through it all," Jenna vowed, making you tear up.
"I thought I would never get you back," you nearly whimpered.
"You, my love, never lost me," Jenna pressed a lingering kiss to your head.
"Can we sit here a bit more?"
"We can sit as long as you need," Jenna pulled your body closer to hers, vowing to never let go again.
