Chapter IV

As they sat amidst the half-packed boxes and memories, Cali's voice broke the somber silence with a hint of excitement.

"You know, Marcus, my birthday is coming up soon," she said, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips.

Marcus's eyes brightened at the mention of her birthday, eager to bring a spark of joy to their conversation. "That's right! We should definitely celebrate, even if we're apart."

Cali nodded, her mind already racing with ideas. "I was thinking... what if we plan a virtual celebration? We could video call each other and have a little party together, just like we used to."

Marcus's smile widened at the suggestion, warmed by Cali's enthusiasm. "I love that idea! We can order some of your favorite food, play some music, and maybe even open presents together."

Cali's eyes lit up at the thought of sharing such a special moment with Marcus, despite the miles between them. "It'll be just like old times, even if we're not in the same room."

As they began to brainstorm ideas for their virtual celebration, the sadness of their impending separation seemed to melt away, replaced by a sense of anticipation and excitement for Cali's upcoming birthday.

As they continued to plan, their laughter and shared memories filling the room, they knew that no matter where they were in the world, their bond would always remain unbreakable, tethering them together even when they were apart.

In the days that followed, Marcus stayed by Cali's side, offering comfort and support as she battled her fever. He brought her favorite snacks, read to her when she couldn't sleep, and made her laugh with his silly jokes.

Despite the seriousness of her condition, Cali found solace in Marcus's presence. He was a constant source of strength and reassurance during her weakest moments, and she couldn't help but feel grateful to have him by her side.

As the days turned into weeks, Cali's fever finally began to break, much to the relief of her family and Marcus. Slowly but surely, she started to regain her strength, her energy returning with each passing day.

And through it all, Marcus never left her side. He was there to celebrate every small victory; from the first time she was able to sit up in bed to the moment she took her first steps after being discharged from the hospital.

As Marcus presented the gift to Cali, a small velvet box containing a delicate ring, her eyes widened in surprise and delight. With trembling hands, she opened the box to reveal the simple yet elegant design of the couple's ring.

"Oh, Marcus, it's beautiful," Cali breathed, her voice filled with emotion as she admired the ring.

With a tender smile, Marcus took the ring from the box and gently slid it onto Cali's left ring finger. Cali mirrored his actions, placing the matching ring on Marcus's finger with a sense of reverence and love.

As they gazed at each other, their fingers intertwined, Cali felt a surge of emotion welling up inside her. This simple gesture symbolized so much more than just a piece of jewelry—it was a tangible representation of their love and commitment to each other.

With tears glistening in her eyes, Cali took a deep breath and began to speak, her voice steady yet filled with emotion.

"Marcus, from the moment I met you, I knew that you were someone special. You've been my rock, my confidant, and my biggest supporter through every twist and turn of life's journey. And today, as we exchange these rings, I want to make a vow to you—to love you unconditionally, to stand by your side through thick and thin, and to care for you with all of my heart, for as long as we both shall live."
