The world history in this alternate timeline was quite different from the real one.
In essence for one reason or another the Brazilian Empire and subsequent First Republic were significantly more successful than in reality. Firstly the emperor Peter I was more bold and was able to annex territories that were controlled by the French and Dutch(Suriname and Cayenne). Furthermore, he was also able to keep the Cisplatina region(Uruguay). Later on with Peter II, Brazil was able to more decisively win the conflict against Paraguay and ended up annexing it. Finally with the conflicts for the Pacific, Chile and Brazil basically split between them Bolivia and Peru, with Brazil annexing the biggest part. Because of this Brazil became significantly stronger and was able to industrialize more by the end of the 19th century.
Industrialization in itself made the proletariat more powerful, and during the 20th century the communist ideas began to spread there coming from Russia. The Prestes Column was actually made into a successful revolution(through Soviet aid) by the end of the 1920s and by 1930 Brazil oficially became a Socialist Republic. The imperialist countries such as the USA did not intervene directly like in the Russian Civil War, because of the Great Depression which led the US into isolation.
With Luis Carlos Prestes as president in the 1930s Brazil followed the lead of the USSR, however slightly behind in certain respects. From 1930 to 1936 Brazil had an analogue to the New Economic Policy, and from 1936 to 1941 had it's own First Five Year Plan. Here however Brazil was significantly different than the USSR. It didn't collectivize agriculture forcefully like the soviets, nor did It ban small private property. While It restricted as much as possible the market, It did not attempt to completely abandon It, mostly regulating it. Likewise the industrialization while quite fast wasnt as focused in Heavy and Militar Industry and had a significantly more pronounced importance to Light Industry(still not the main focus). Finally, Brazil did not enforce Lysenkoism and already began to develop an embryo to the Cybernetics program that would later come.
In terms of Foreign Policy, while initially Brazil did enter as a full member of the Comintern, It quickly retracted it's membership due to the controlling Nature of the USSR at the time. It still had pretty good relations with the country, but It decided to attempt a more sovereign approach to geopolitics. Brazil Because of it's more favorable position geopolitically(and geographically) was able to be more anti-fascist, when It came to cutting all diplomatic and economic ties with Italy, then Japan and finally Germany(1935, 1936, 1938). Brazil sent military help for Spain(Republic), China and Ethiopia. Brazil was also able to influence the politics of countries in South America, and supported Peronism in Argentina and Bolivarianism in Venezuela, Ecuador and Colombia(which were more socialistic in this timeline). Brazil did not force these countries to adopt it's own Socialist worldview, as long as they were anti-imperialist and anti-fascist. So once again different than the soviets.
Regardless World War 2 still broke out as usual and many people died. However because Brazil became a bigger player in this scenario, the war was more quickly won by the allied side with Brazil itself declaring war on the Axis as soon as the USA did(although It didn't immediately send direct help for the soviets, not until 1942). Brazil was an active participant in the battle in Africa and Asia and then finally helping a lot on the landing of troops in West Europe. All in all the war ended completely by late 1944 in this timeline, primarily because of Brazil's contribution.
The aftermath of the war was significantly more favorable to Brazil than most european countries since there was no land invasion of Brazil, like the USA. By the end of the war Brazil was number 3 in the world right behind the USA and the USSR. Brazil sat alongside the "Big 3" and became instead the "Big 4".
But of course right after that came the Cold War which started even earlier, since Brazil was totally opposed to the creation of Israel and partition of Palestine. Although Brazil did indeed help many jews including through accepting a large number of jewish people escaping German persecution. The country did not accept the UN terms, because they not only favoured Israel greatly, but It did not ask what the Palestinians thought. Even so, Brazil despite not recognizing Israel and being One of the Permanent Members of the UN Security Council, Brazil was completely outvoted even by the USSR. And with massive european funding Israel still pushed through and became recognized as well as grabbing a Lot of land from Palestine, but this time the Arab counter offensive was more prevalent because of Brazil's military support, so Israel existed but much smaller than in reality.
Another issue was the Korean War as well as the recognition of the People's Republic of China as the real China. The Korean War in this timeline didn't happen, because Brazil was able to veto the UN intervention and indirectly suported the North, which swiftly won against the South. China was not able to invade Taiwan however. Tensions were
very high specially since Brazil got the nuke even before the USSR(since Brazil actually funded research in Quantum Physics and such) in 1947, and so Brazil did not help China to realize and invasion of Taiwan. After that Brazil was mostly a mediator between socialist states, by having a better relationship with Yugoslavia and trying to push It away from Western influence. Furthermore, Brazil massively helped ease tensions between China and the USSR(as well as Albania) after Krushchev came to power. Brazil's intervention also eased up the Great Chinese Famine and the Great Leap Forward was not as problematic (although It still caused many issues).
Brazil helped the revolutions in Cuba, Nicaragua and Grenada. In the Middle East having good relations with Iran and neutrality with Iraq, not favoring any Side on the Iran Iraq war. In Africa, Brazil influenced mostly the Portuguese speaking countries, to get their indepence to Portugal and helping their revolutions to succeed.
Brazil was able to succesfully develop Cybernetics and alongside Chile(Allende) and Argentina, led the research towards a successful Cybersyn. Which then further led the country to develop even faster and avoid stagnation which affected the USSR. With the research into genetics making the country the world leader in agriculture and cattle raising. It also developed a Social Credit System. Brazil also boosted even further the economy by incentivizing immigration to Brazil, and focusing more on Light Industry by the 1960s.
While Brazil did develop it's Nuclear and Space Technology. It ultimately abandoned the whole Space and Arms Race by the time It got a decent detterant(hundreds of nukes and icbms). After launching it's own sattelites and it's own Space station, It ultimately let the Race towards the Moon for later, and decided to focus on other things instead. Brazil became the global leader when It came to it's Navy and Naval Technology, and One of the best and most advanced when It came to the Air Force. But although having a respectable Land Army, It was top 5 only.
In other instances Brazil did not comdemn, but also did not support the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, since Brazil would much rather simply send indirect help for the Afghan Socialist Government. China still followed Dengism after Mao's death. Japan became One of the Socialist Countries. And Portugal and Spain became Socialist and got out of NATO. Also Pakistan and India became Socialist and tried easing tensions.
However the Soviet Union still declined and ended up almost collapsing If not for the intervention of Brazil in support of the 1992 coup which was successful. But the Soviets still had to dissolve the Warsaw Pact and do many economic reforms. Seeing that, Brazil was also forced to also do reforms and become non interventionist, however It was meant to only be temporary until the Socialist Bloc could reemerge. Regardless Brazil accepted the creation of Specially Economic Zones with Joint-Venture between private and state. And allowed medium bussinesses to exist although heavily controlled. Brazil did not allow billionaires to exist however, and was a much more advanced form of socialism than modern China. The USSR however followed basically the same as China. Yugoslavia still collapsed and so did many Socialist Countries. However overall many Countries specially in Latin America and Africa still remained anti-imperialist, because Brazil had massively subsidized them prior to cancelling susidies and ending the Cold War in the 90s. The largest economies came to be USA, Brazil, Japan, China and USSR, respectfully, by the end of the Cold War. The New Prime Minister after Prestes was Luis Maurício da Mota. While the USSR had the grandson of Zhukov as the New reformist general secretary after Gorbachev.
After that there was a relative period of peace like in pur current world. However tensions once again reemerged after the USSR was able to stabilize it's economy, and It decided that It wouldn't let the US keep advancing(Specially in the Middle East) and wouldn't let NATO keep expanding without counter balance. And after the Syrian Civil War, a New Cold War Emerged. Now with China, Japan, India, Pakistan, USSR and Brazil slowly uniting more to counter NATO and the Western Powers in a New BRICS+ Alliance.
However ALL of that IS forgotten when a bright of light envelops the USSR and Brazil completely.
