CECIL EVERTON held a secret, one that had been around for as long as Cecil had been born. It was not one of the secrets many of those of high status held, such as being on the brink of bankruptcy which so happened to be the most popular of all, but one that would never be able to be returned from. The famous Duke of Newbury, having held the title since the death of the late Duke twenty years prior, known to be the mysterious heartthrob, was, in reality, not. Cecilia Everton was a Duke by title only.

HER STORY was not one she had the chance to repeat to another soul yet; her father dying when she was only a week old and her mama hiding her identity in order for the small family of two to keep their estate, status and finances. Being a newborn, Cecilia was not given the chance to protest, nor was she given the choice to return to her true self once she was old enough to understand what was being asked of her. Truthfully, Cecilia played her role of Duke to the best of her ability, vowing to continue to do so until her mama had passed, not wishing for the woman who raised her with nothing but love and kindness to be on the front of such ridicule.

IT WAS WHEN her mama passed that Cecil visited London for the first time in her twenty years of living, with the hopes of acquiring an audience with the Queen to explain her situation and how it had led to the drastic choices she had made, prepared to pay with her life for the deception she had caused. However, coming to London, she was visited by Lady Danbury with an invitation to a ball as the Duke, so Cecil put her plans on hold for one night.

UNFORTUNATELY FOR CECIL, she had not expected to come across a woman who piqued her interest from the first glance. Growing up as she did, Cecil was aware of the marriage season, but, given her predicament, did not attend to partake, however, she could not help herself from requesting a dance from the one woman who seemed to despise being there almost as much as she did. All it took was one dance, and Cecil was infatuated. One Quadrille and Cecil chose to continue playing the role of the Duke in the hopes of courting Eloise Bridgerton.
