Jennie looked out of the window daydreaming about the previous night she had spent with Lisa. It was a dream come true. It was everything Jennie thought it would be. Maybe even more. She got chills just thinking about Lisa's hands on her or her hands on Lisa. She was already ravenous for their next encounter.
Jisoo had been talking for the greater part of their journey, and she just now realized that Jennie had not heard a word she said. She suddenly and loudly yelled, "Whoa!!"
Jennie's attention jerked towards the road as she braced herself for impact. Nothing happened. Jisoo laughed, and she understood the joke now. "That wasn't funny, Jisoo."
"A little." She said, shrugging. "Where's your head? You seem out of it."
"Just thinking about.... things." Jennie said.
She was a private person. She kept most things to herself, always revealing just enough to satisfy the listener.
"Things like what? Yumi?" She asked with a small smirk on her face. She knew once Jennie had someone in her crosshairs, it was hard for her to forget about them. She was like a dog with a bone with those sorts of things.
"Would it kill you to mind your business?" She asked, laughing a little. She wasn't wrong. Right after her thoughts of Lisa, Jennie had been letting her curiosity get the best of her.
"Okay. Fine. So don't check the glove box." Jisoo said, dramatically waving the hand she wasn't steering with. "And if you do look, whatever you do, don't read the information inside the folder."
Jennie rolled her eyes and opened the glove box. There was a clasp envelope folded inside. Jennie plucked it from its hiding place and opened it. As her eyes scanned the papers, she realized what she was looking at. An employee file on Yumi Copes, but there was more information there than a usual employee file.
"I did a little digging myself just to make sure she checks out. When I can, I like to know who you're involving yourself with." Jisoo said, clenching her jaw. She knew Jennie didn't always appreciate her snooping.
"That's an invasion of her privacy, Jisoo. I wish you would have spoken to me first." Jennie said. Still, she couldn't help but read what was printed on the paper. Yumi seemed like the average girl next door. No criminal background. No drug use, not even marijuana. She comes from a stable home. Decent education. She had two cats. Jennie didn't care for pets that weren't of the human variety.
"Anyway, you're welcome." Jisoo said as she brought the car to a stop. Jennie looked up and realized they were at one of her restaurants and not one of the new buildings she wanted to see.
"What are we doing here?" She asked, putting the papers back inside their folder.
"Tony said he needed me to check something out. I'll only be a second."
Jennie reckoned she might as well follow him inside. If it was something important, there was no point in waiting to find out. Plus, she might just steal a glimpse at Yumi. The two of them walked inside, and it was bustling with customers. That was a good thing. Jennie was happy to see so many satisfied patrons. Tony spotted them and waved Jisoo to the back. Jisoo told Jennie she could handle whatever it was alone and encouraged her to stay up front. Jennie sat at the counter and scrolled through her phone.
"Are you ordering anything today or did you just come to say hello again?" A little voice asked from behind the counter. Jennie looked up to see Yumi standing there, smiling at her.
Jennie couldn't wipe the grin from her face if she tried. Yumi was being cute with her. She was flirting, and Jennie didn't want it to stop.
"What would you suggest I order, Yumi?" Jennie asked. It was a question for question's sake. Jennie handpicked everything on the menu from the appetizers to the desserts. There wasn't a thing listed she couldn't cook or taste just from memory. Still, she was curious to see what Yumi would suggest.
"I guess that depends, ma'am." Yumi said.
"On?"
"What you're in the mood for."
She was so adorable. Jennie had to remember to keep her thoughts to herself, though. She was still her boss, and this could get really tricky really fast if she wasn't careful. Jennie was sure the last case Lisa wanted was defending her against a sexual harassment suit. "I want something sweet."
Yumi smiled innocently. She wasn't sure if Jennie was flirting or just being polite and making conversation with the staff. "I hear the chocolate cake is to die for. Like everything on the menu, it's one hundred percent vegan and one hundred percent... sinfully delicious." Yumi shrugged, "Plus it's a founder's favorite."
She was just showing off at this point. Jennie liked it. Apparently, Yumi had done her research. In each section of the menu, there was an asterisk beside one item. Those were Jennie's favorite things to eat. "Sinfully delicious, huh?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"But you haven't had it?" Jennie asked.
"I was waiting, thinking maybe the founder would come make it one day. I'd like to try hers before anyone else's." Yumi said, making direct eye contact with Jennie. She was trying to be obvious with her intentions. Hopefully, it was working.
"Maybe she will." Jennie said as she stood. Jisoo was walking back to the front with Tony right behind her. She was rolling down her sleeves and appeared to have worked up a sweat. Jennie eyed her skeptically. "Everything okay?" She asked.
"Yeah. It's all taken care of." Jisoo said before Tony could speak. "Good work, kid." She slapped Tony's back and gave him a firm nod of approval. Tony beamed with pride at Jisoo's words.
"Nice seeing you again, Yumi." Jennie said, extending her hand to shake. Yumi took her hand quickly and smiled.
"You too, Miss Kim."
Their handshake lingered longer than it needed to. Jisoo and Jennie left the restaurant. Jisoo looked over at Jennie when they got back into the car and smiled.
"Shut up and drive." Jennie said before Jisoo got the chance to tease her.
She chuckled and put the car in drive. "Yes, ma'am."
