My sister is focusing quite intently in the direction of the door. I don't see anything, but then again, neither can she. She’s been blind since the fire that killed our parents and older brother. Her lungs were also damaged, so she only has a few years left to live at the most. But, we've been saving up to get her treatment. If I fail to save the only thing left that matters to me, I could never forgive myself. Despite all of the hardships that we've been through, she has remained positive and she never complains. They say that if you lose one of your senses, the other ones become stronger to compensate for the weakness. So when she asks the shadows if they want to join us for dinner, I believe her. That doesn't mean I'm not surprised when Xavier steps out.
“Wh-What are you doing here? How did you find me? Are you here to kill us?” I don't mean to interrogate him, but they are valid concerns.
“I mean, you weren't exactly being cautious. You just walked down the middle of the road. And you weren't quiet when you were sneaking out of my house either. And as for that last question, I'm not quite sure yet. Though I am wondering how your sister knew I was there.” I go to respond when my sister answers the question herself.
“I’m blind, so I've gotten used to sensing when other people are in the room even if they make no sound. Are you going to eat with us?” I am surprised at how calm she is, and Xavier appears to be thinking the same thing. But we don't have enough food for three people. I lost my money and I wasn't able to get any more food. I look down and to my suprise see that my sister set the table for three people and already filled his bowl with soup. This must be the last of our food. Though, I suppose there isn't much I can do about it at this point. Xavier walks towards the table, warily eyeing the soup.
“It’s not poisoned, if that’s what you're wondering.” To prove her point, she reaches over and eats a spoonful of it. Xavier shrugs.
“I’m not very hungry.” Xavier turns and starts walking towards the door. I watch him walk out of the room and then I jump out of my chair and follow him. He opens the door and I reach for his hand. I think I am going a little too fast because I crash into him, essentially pinning him up against the door.
“Do you want to say goodbye or something?”
“No, I just wanted to let you know that if you so much as look at my sister wrong, I will kill you, no matter how hot you are.” I freeze. I didn't mean to say that last part. As soon as I say it, I also realize just how close we are. I blush, and my entire body feels strange. Traitorous body. You are not supposed to react like this to a murderer.
“Is that all?” He smirks, and it's as if he can tell exactly what I'm thinking.
“Well… I never thanked you for saving me from William. So… thanks I guess.” We stay like that for a second. Or possibly an eternity. I don't really know. I glance up at him, and see that he is looking right at me. His blue eyes seem to see into my soul. I blush even harder and look down.
“Careful, Evelyn. If you keep doing that I might think you’re in love with me.” His smile is quick and sharp, like a knife. I take a quick step back. Yes. That's exactly the problem. If you say something like that while looking like that, I might just think I'm in love with you. I move back farther and wait. He turns and opens the door. With one last glance at me, he walks out and closes it behind him.
I stand there for a while, watching the door. Then I shake my head to clear my thoughts and head back into the kitchen.
