I sigh running my hands through my light brown wavy hair. It’s almost time for me to go home and I still can’t finish this report. I have this case that’s assigned to me. The Thompson case. I have been chasing this serial killer for 5 years now. She goes by the name of Janette Thompson. She has been going around killing women, men, and even children. Last year, I failed to catch her when I had her in my custody, so I had someone help me with this. Lisa Purnish. Me and my boss, Sean, thought that she was the perfect candidate to be partners with me. She has been an amazing help to me lately. “Sophia, it is 11:00. What are you still doing here?”
A familiar voice asks, I look up from my report and see Lisa Purnish standing at my desk with her white buttoned-down shirt tucked into her dark blue pencil skirt and her red-orange hair wrapped in a high ponytail. “I need to finish this report,” I say as I put my attention back on the report. She sighs sitting on the corner of my desk. “Sophia, you need to take a break. You’ve been here since 4 o’clock this morning. Please, just go home.” She says with a soft tone making me look into her dark blue eyes as they bore into my grey eyes.
“I can’t go home. I need to finish this.”
“No, what you NEED is to go home to your husband and son.” She says emphasizing the word ‘Need’.
“After I finish this, I’ll go home. Okay?” I say going back to my report. She sighs getting off my desk but making sure she grabs my report. I look at her reaching forward to grab it back from her. “Lisa, I need that,” I say but she shakes her head walking towards her desk where her bag is located. “I’ll be holding onto this until tomorrow.” She says as I sigh sitting back and rubbing my temples. Giving in, I grabbed my black bag off the marble tile floor. “Fine, I’ll go home. Are you happy?” I asked her with a hint of annoyance. She grins and then nods and says, “Yes I am.” I roll my eyes shutting off the green lamp displayed on my desk. “So, I’ll see you tomorrow?” She asks as we both head to the front of the building. I raise an eyebrow looking at her in confusion asking her, “Tomorrow?” She lightly chuckles opening the door. “Tomorrow is your housewarming party. Remember?” Suddenly remember the housewarming party. I take my keys out of my purse. “Oh. Yes, I remember.” She softly laughs walking to her black 2023 Honda car.
“Well see you tomorrow, Sophia,” she chirps getting inside her car. Opening the car door to my blue 2023 Honda car I slightly smile getting inside. “See you tomorrow, Lisa.” She drives off and I sigh running my hand down my face and I drive home. Getting out of the car I walked up to the medium brown house. It’s not much but it’s home and me, my husband and my son are okay with that. I open the door and my legs immediately get engulfed in a hug. “Mommy!” I smile closing the door. “Hi, honey,” I say while smiling. “Mommy, mommy I made you dinner.” I take off my black coat. “Oh, you did?” He rapidly nods. “Yes.” I put my hand on my chin. “Hmm, and Daddy had nothing to do with helping you right?” He shakes his head grinning. “No. I made it all by myself.” And as he says that my husband, Jeremy, comes up to me with an apron tied around his waist.
“I didn’t help you, Thomas?” Thomas turns around and his hazel brown curls follow his movement. “No. I made dinner for mommy by myself.” Jeremy smiles and looks at me with grey eyes. “How was work, honey?” I sigh at his question, and he nods as he gets what’s happening. “Thomas, why don’t you go get ready for dinner? And me and your mom will be down here waiting for you.” He nods and lets go of my legs. “Okay.” And he bounces towards the stairs and Jeremy takes my coat and my purse from me. “Go sit on the couch, honey.” I nod at his words, and I sit on the white cushion couch immediately feeling relaxed. I sigh in exhaustion leaning my head back and closing my eyes. “So, what happened?”
“It’s this case. I can’t get the serial killer behind bars and because of me thousands of people are getting killed by the second. Just this morning Sean chewed me out because the serial killer stroked again, and I wasn’t there to stop it.” I say with exhaustion written all over my face. “But what about Lisa? She’s also helping you with the case?” I shrug and open my eyes to look at Jeremy. “Sean said that Lisa is new. So, she shouldn’t have to deal with my mistakes.” Jeremy raises an eyebrow. “Wait what?” He asks me and before I can answer his question Thomas comes downstairs with a smile. “I’m done!” We look at Thomas and back at each other. “We’ll finish this conversation after dinner.” I nod as he stands up grabbing Thomas's hand and leading him to the kitchen.
After dinner, I took a shower, sang a lullaby for Thomas and now I’m lying on the bed as Jeremy massages my neck. “By the way, Lisa said that she’ll see us tomorrow.” I hear him hum and I close my eyes sighing in pure bliss due to the knots leaving my neck. “Hey uhm, honey?”
“Yeah?” I tilt my head looking up at Jeremy. “Do you find Lisa weird in any way?” I shake my head. “No. Why do you ask?” He shakes his head sitting down beside me. “I don’t know. I just get weird vibes from her.” I chuckle while lying down. “You just need to get to know her.” He nods telling me that he agrees with me. He lays down beside me and places the blue duvet cover on top of us. “Well, we might as well go to sleep. We have a busy day ahead of us.” I nod, turning off the lamp. “Good night.”
“Good night.” He says then follows with a yawn.
“Please don’t. I have children.” Begs the middle-aged man with blood dripping down his dirtied face. The person with a black mask just laughs at his pleading and begging. “Why should I care that you have children?” asks the person with the knife. Their black shoes with tiny spots of blood on them, black pants and black jacket camouflaged into the night and lastly, the black gloves leave no trace of the fingerprints.
“P-please… I’ll give you the money. Money yes. Is t-that what you want?” The person smirks and laughs eerily taking off their mask. The middle-aged man gasps as he covers the stab wound in his leg. “Y-You’re the serial killer…” The now-revealed serial killer Janette Thompson smirks and walks closer to the man. “The one and only.” She gets closer and closer to him holding up her knife. “P-please let me go. I-I won’t tell anyone I saw you.”
“Now why would I do that? You’ve seen my face and now… you must die.”
