As of today, there are 38 of us, the same routine as always. We wake up at 6 o'clock, the ringing of a bell waking us all. Then, once we get changed and ready for the day, it's time to prepare breakfast. But there was no more albino boy helping us push the cart with pitchers of water and milk. There was no more bed for the white haired boy. His toothbrush was no longer seen. His seat during tests were left vacant. During free time Ray wasn't seen under his tree, he wasn't in the library either, he was left to sulk in his room. Emma and me were the only one's outside, her under a tree near the house; I was located deep in the forest perched up in a tree, where none of the children could find me.
The day went by agonizingly slowly, night had fell and the five of us met Ray in the dinner hall.
"Let's die here." He stated, his eyes accentuated with dark bags which implied he had gotten no sleep last night. Fortunately for me, I had gotten rest once my unconscious body was found in the bathroom, fatigued by the crying and unconscious by how my body couldn't handle the pain of the migraines.
"It's impossible. We're surrounded by cliffs. And the only bridge is the one going out of the headquarters. Besides, I'm tired. I'm really tired." He breathed out, his eyes told everything. The wary look of old age, despite being so young. He suffered the hardships not even an adult could handle, and he had to age too fast in order to try and keep alive the one's he loved most.
"Then what about this?" Emma held out the device made to nullify the tracking devices, but Ray pushed it away from his face.
"I don't need it. You can have it. If you want to escape, go. I'm out. Sorry, Emma." Ray looked up at her, and Emma looked sick, as she ran off, crutches hitting the floorboards as she exited the room. I only stared at him, hugging Gilda and Don briefly before I exited as well; heading up to the library.

November 29, 2045.
It was another restless night for me, thunder and lightning heard booming from outside, and nightmares keeping me up. Lightning frightened me without cause, it was an irrational fear of mine that I couldn't explain. To hopefully tire my brain and body, I headed to the library to read books so I could doze off and slip back into bed later. It was now weeks after Normans death, my headaches continued to worsen, and Ray was out of the plan. The escape however, was still in motion, but undercover.
As I entered the library, another lamp was already at a table, and a dark haired boy was seated there. Though I already knew who it was, the lightning that cracked outside the window confirmed my thoughts. He looked up at me as I let out a small squeak at the lightning, but looked back down at a book he was reading. I went to a shelf, picking up a book about animals, and sitting directly across from him at the same table. We were in silence for a while, but it wasn't until my constant jumps from the thunder or lightning that he finally spoke up.
"Are you scared.. of thunderstorms?" He croaked out, it had been so long since I've heard him speak. He looked up at me with his same tired eyes that I saw that night long ago, and I nodded. He slapped a hand to his forehead, and continued to read. Since I brought over another lamp, I noticed he wasn't squinting while he read, which is what I noticed when I first entered the room. The thunder continued, and my reading was often interrupted by a rumbling, and I couldn't take it anymore. I curled up in my seat, and Ray only sighed, before he stood up, and I looked up to see where he was going. Instead of leaving the library, he only went to the bookshelves and pulled out another book, then coming back and sitting in the chair next to me.
"Thunder is nothing but a natural cause from the Earth. It's caused by the rapid expansion and contraction of the air makes a sound wave that we know as thunder... Lightning is caused by the air acting as an insulator between the positive and negative charges in the cloud and between the cloud and the ground. Lightning itself is when the differences in the charges become too great, this makes the air break down and there's a rapid discharge of electricity." He placed the book between us, his finger tracing the words, stopping to point at photos. I nodded, following along. Although I knew already how lightning and thunder occurred, it was a bit comforting to know that someone was trying to help me overcome my fear.
"Every time thunder and lightning happens, just remember this book and the scientific reasoning of why those things occur. I used to do that when I was little... I was also afraid of lightning." He admitted to me, which was odd of him.
"I got over it, of course, I'm not a baby anymore." He teased, though the pain in his voice was still evident. I managed to pinch his arm, where he swatted my hand away, and I cracked a small smile.
"I just thought maybe this would help you a little, you were jumping so much earlier that you couldn't even finish one page of your book." He said, observing me earlier.
"You didn't jump once while I read this to you, and it thundered once that whole time." He told me, as I hugged my knees and sat there, the sleepiness finally hitting me. The night continued as he read the book aloud to me about animals, talking about sloths, my favorite animals in which I liked to mimic their positions on trees. Once we both were tired out, we put books away, soon the bell would chime for everyone to arise, and we hurriedly went back to bed to get a wink of sleep and act like none of us had ever left our rooms.
"Thank you, Ray." I told him stopping in front of the library doors that felt just like that one evening when we were exposed as traitors. As for thanking him, those words and his name I thought I'd never say in a sentence together. He only nodded at me, trudging his way back to the bedroom. It felt like that short amount of time we forgot about Normans absence, but once we left that room we had to face reality once again, the reality that he'd never come back.
