Draco couldn't help but smile at the reaction that Sloane was having. Whoever Pickett and Teddy were, Draco liked them already. However, the same could not be said for Goose who, until now had been sitting happily at the table between Sloane and Draco and was loving life as he was fed carrots and chips. But as soon as he heard the names he jumped in fright and was now currently hiding in the inside pocket of Draco's blazer. "You alright in there?" Draco bent down to whisper as his pocket shook slightly. He peeked in just enough to see Goose shake his head and cross his little arms in a huff. "You going to stay in there?" Goose nodded. Draco picked up a few grapes from the pavlova dish and handed them into the little niffler. "Just don't squish the alright?" Goose nodded and Draco closed his blazer again and looked next to him where Sloane was.
"It's so good to see you guys again," Sloane was beaming as she lifted Pickett, the bowtruckle, out of the box just as Teddy, Newt's niffler, tipped the box over and fell out onto the table. "I have missed you both so much." She lifted her free hand to use her index finger to stroke Pickett and then gave Teddy a high five.
"Now you are both going to be on your best behaviour, or I will have Mallory come back and collect you again. Right?" Newt was speaking more like a father would than anything. He then looked down at Sloane. "I thought they might cheer you up."
"Goose?" Sloane turned to look down to the bench between herself and Draco and then up on the table. "Goose where are you?" She looked up and down and then under the table. "I want you to meet Pickett and Teddy."
Draco pointed to his chest. "I think he may have already met them."
Newt was nodding. "Yeah, Goose has met them already. He has no issue with Pickett, but Teddy was a little mean to him the last time they met." The niffler began to squeak at Newt with his hands on his hips. "No, I know that you didn't say anything bad, but you did call him small fry." Again the niffler squeaked. "But it was still not nice, and it hurt Goose's feelings." More squeaking. "Well, you could try to apologise and actually mean it this time?" Everyone was in awe that Newt could understand the squeaking without the spell Sloane and Draco used. "You did not you little liar!" This time Teddy stamped one of his feet as he argued. "Because I was there and -" he shook his head. "Why are you arguing with me about this? You called him small fry, you told him he was a runt, and you owe him an apology." Teddy turned away in a huff.
"Teddy," Sloane said leaning down. "Goose is one of my best friends. I love him. It would be very upsetting if you hurt his feelings and didn't try to make amends." Teddy looked at Sloane and folded his little arms again. "Remember when Squash called you chubby, and you sulked for three days and wouldn't eat anything in an attempt to lose weight? Remember how sick you got? You were miserable and all you wanted was for Squash to apologise to you." Teddy unfolded his arms and turned to look up at Sloane. "I talked with Squash for you and I got him to say he was sorry. And I took you out for ice cream to cheer you up. So why won't you say sorry to Goose? You hurt his feelings which isn't nice, and you know how upsetting it can be to have your friends do something mean to you."
Newt was nodding as Sloane spoke. She had such a way with animals that made him proud. This is why he knew that Goose would be safe with her. She would protect him and treat him like her family. And he thought that she might need him just as much as he needed her. He had no idea how right he was about that.
Teddy looked down, ashamed of himself and Newt knew that this meant he knew he was in the wrong. Sloane looked at Draco. "Are you hiding Goose?" Draco nodded and held open his blazer open. Everyone watched as Goose peaked his little head out of the pocket, shyly looking between Newt, Sloane and Teddy. "Goose, come out, please. Teddy would like to say something."
The little niffler looked up to Draco. "It's alright buddy," Draco smiled. "I am right here, and I honestly believe that Teddy is going to make amends. Just hear him out." The little creature nodded and slowly crawled out of Draco's jacket, down his arm and onto the table, now standing in front of Teddy. It was only now, in front of another niffler that everyone could see how small Goose was. He barely reached up to Teddy's shoulders. For a few minutes, everyone held their breath as Teddy and Goose began to squeak to each other, Newt nodding along, clearly understanding everything being said. Draco was feeling a little apprehensive. On one hand, he wanted Goose to make amends but on the other, what if Goose then decided that he wanted to head back to America with Newt and Teddy? That would mean that Draco and Sloane would not get to see him as often, if at all. Draco wasn't much of an animal lover, but Goose was very different. More like a little sidekick, or a very small child. Draco had grown to love Goose like family. He, Sloane and Goose were a little family, and he didn't want that to change.
