Chapter Twenty-Eight
Wolves

"You did what?!"

"I ate a turtle," Enid repeated sheepishly as Alyssa laughed. "I had to! I hadn't eaten in days."

"I hear that...We ate dogs," Alyssa admitted

Enid laughed. "You ate puppies? How is that any better?" she questions.

Alyssa rolled her eyes playfully. "They weren't puppies, they were full-grown. They probably would've been Walker food eventually. We killed them humanely," she argued.

After running into each other at the pantry, the two girls decided they needed to go for a walk around Alexandria and catch up. Enid would've liked to go out, but she had to go to Ron's and Alyssa had training with Mikey. So they settled for some alone time and exercise.

"Okay, that can't be the worst thing you've eaten," Enid insisted, crossing her arms.

"Every time before that when I was on the road it was still early on. Things weren't as hard to come by as they are now. And besides, there's a lot of plants and stuff you can eat that grow pretty much everywhere. You just gotta know how to spot them," Alyssa explained.

Enid quirked an eyebrow. "Like what?"

"Uhm...dandelions, some types of cacti, roses, cattails, a bunch of mushrooms," she listed from memory.

"Have you seen a cactus anywhere around here?" Enid questioned teasingly.

"I'm from Arizona, dummy," Alyssa reminded her.

Enid grinned. "Oh, right. You're a cowboy."

"Mhm. Yeehaw and such," Alyssa responded, chuckling.

Enid smiled. "I just realized you never answered my question. You know, the one I asked when I first met you? About you getting shot?"

"Oh, yeah," Alyssa recalled vaguely. "Although, it wasn't much of a question as much as a rude statement, right?"

Enid shrugged it off. "I guess I was a little hostile back then," she supposed. "I'm just curious about how it felt."

"It didn't feel like much at first. It was a life-or-death situation, so I didn't really have time to think about it. It was kind of like a pinch and then when I realized what had happened, it started to feel like a burning or tearing. I didn't really feel it for long 'cause I passed out from blood loss," Alyssa remembered.

As she spoke, she felt almost a phantom pain in her shoulder and side. Suddenly she felt very aware of the bullet still lodged in her shoulder. It was probably grown into the flesh about now or stuck to bone or something. It didn't bother her a lot, but her shoulder felt stiff sometimes and she couldn't lift her arm too fast without feeling a shot of pain.

Alyssa tilted her head slightly and tried to go back to the days on the road. The days all sort of blurred together. She vaguely remembered all that happened. The church, being on the road with Greatam, Eugene not being a scientist, finding and then losing Beth, meeting Noah, losing Tyreese, meeting Aaron. It felt like it lasted forever but at the same time only a second. Like it was some sort of time paradox.
